S&W model 17

Very nice!

My first S&W rimfire was a very smooth 6” Model 17-3 like yours. The previous owner took good care of it and it shoots very well. I liked it so much it quickly turned into a matching 6” Model 48-3 .22 WMR. Then a 4” Model 18-4 .22 LR, then a 4” Model 48-7 .22 WMR, and then a 4” Model 34 .22 LR. Naturally the .38’s followed, so it was a 6” Model 14-3, then a 4” Model 15-3, then a…

The S&W K frames become addicting pretty quickly! ;)

Stay safe.

I had a 17-2 I sold off a few years ago then got a 617 to replace it. i sold off the second 17-3 a few years ago, I am looking to get either a .22mag revolver or a .22mag M&P. any thoughts?

The negatives to the WMR in a handgun are the ammo cost is a lot higher and the WMR blast isn’t much fun, plus even a good .22 WMR doesn’t seem to have the accuracy of a good .22 LR.

The WMR handguns are fun, but a good LR revolver would get my nod over a comparable WMR.

But that’s just my opinion, worth no more or no less than anyone else’s.

Stay safe.

Beautiful. Enjoy.
I had a 6" K-22 once upon a time, found a 4" M-18 and sold the former to finance the latter.
Wish I could have kept both, but you can't own them all (not at once anyway...or I can't anyway).
And I prefer a 4" barrel on a K-frame. (Actually, on an N-frame too :))

Howdy

Here is my Model 17-3 that I bought brand-spanky new in 1975. I still have the box and all the goodies.

It is still wearing the Magna grips that came with it.

Great find! My uncle passed back in 2001 and I wound up with a Model 17, no dash, that was supposedly born in 1958 which makes it one year younger than me😁. It`s very accurate, much more so than I and only had a little bluing wear at the muzzle. Enjoy your 17 and I`ll bet it`ll be one of the last guns you`d ever sell.

Installed the Ahrends grips today. Had to inlet them a bit since they were round butt and the 17-4 are square. The feel much better than the factory targets.

You did a good job on those grips! I accidentally bought square butt grips for a round butt a while back and they never did fit right. I ended up buying the right grips to finish it correctly.

I bought several sets of the Thai-made finger groove grips. On the lighter kicking S&W K frames like these .38’s, these grips fit my hands very well and don’t beat me up. :)

Let us know how it shoots with the new shoes on

Got my no dash when my dad passed in 2019. I will never part with it.

Something to consider….
Just last Tuesday, I was chronographing some Aguila Inteceptor .22lr ammo in my various .22Handguns
As was to be expected, there was some velocity loss off the advertised 1,470fps for an 18” rifle barrel.
My Ruger LCP was the intended recipient and it didn’t disappoint. It got 1,050fps. and shot to near POA. The TX22 wasn’t much faster at 1,100fps. The Heritage 6” w/adj sites got a respectable 1,225fps matching most rimfire rifles with generic.22lr ammo.
The real surprise was the S&W 617. First shot registered 1,357fps! Subsequent rounds ran 1,295 to 1,350fps. Furthermore, they landed 4-touching at 15yds, with 2 others less than 1/2” away, centered in the 2” target dot I was aiming at. This is even faster than .22wrm from the .22mag cylinder in the Heritage.
Only caveat is that extraction was “stiff”… but wow at the performance!
Added: it’s the new hollow point version of the Interceptor.

What you're looking for is a M48. I have a 6" M48-4 (1980 vintage) and really like it It's loud as hell, and at dusk leaves a pretty nice fireball. .22 Mag ammo is generally aimed at rifles, so the powder is relatively slow burning. I wouldn't say the blast isn't much fun, but it does have a bit more recoil than .22LR, so good groups are more of a challenge. I shoot mine pretty well, and on a rest, it is a close 3rd behind my Ruger 22/45 MkIII and my S&W M41 in the accuracy department. Like Riomouse says, the ammo is more expensive, and unless you just want a magnum version, unless you plan to hunt with it, it might not be one you'd use a lot.

The biggest issue with a 22 Magnum is that the bore size is different than that of the 22 Long Rifle. That’s the issue …

If you have a rifle, or pistol/revolver, with the correct bore size for the 22Mag cartridge, a 22 Magnum can be great!

That is the biggest issue with the Ruger ‘Single Six’ 22LR/22WMR ‘Convertible’ revolver with the extra cylinder … it’s a 22LR bore.
