I was at my local gun store this week and found a S&W 629 (no lock) with a 6” barrel. I am a poor man so I put it in lay-a-way and will be able to pick it up next week. Can’t wait. This will be my first 44 magnum 6”. Wished it would have been the M29, but I am happy with stainless.

Congratulations. l just bought a Model 29-10. I'm poor too, so I got one with a lock and saved a few hundred bucks. No big deal to me (the lock), but I'd have been just as happy with a 629 if that had been what turned up.

I didn’t know they even made them with a lock anymore. I guess as a young man I always wanted the M29 because of Dirty Harry and I was elated to get the 629. I was a young man when that show came out and I think every police I knew wanted one. Mine does not have a dash. Lock up is super tight. Not for sure the manufacturers date being a 629 no dash. I don’t imagine the locks makes one bit a difference in shooting. I guess I am just old fashioned. Can’t wait to get it and post some pics.
Edit: I just looked up and I think I am right the 629 was produced around 1980.

I'm kinda old fashioned myself, but I just made peace with the lock. It's been around more than twenty years I guess, and doesn't seem to be going away anytime soon. Plus in this case it was about $400 less expensive than a -2 in the case beside it.

I think my -10 was made about 2015, so it's fairly new. If it had been fired before I got it, it wasn't often. I have fired it since. It shoots well. She tends to buck a LOT with full house magnum ammo. Those factory grips and too narrow for my hand, so I've replaced them with a set of Hogues. The Hogue's are ugly, but work well for what they're made for. I fired ten rounds of magnum ammo, :what: and those will probably be the last I'll fire. From there on out, it's Harry Callahan's "Light Specials" for me. I'm a wimp these days.

I just love a 4" N frame. They look like serious business.

That is a good looking gun. I like those grips better than my target grips.

Very nice! I love the Model 29 and 629 revolvers. They are beautiful, and deliver a very satisfying wallop without being unpleasant to shoot.

Love my 629. I bought it used at the Tulsa Show. It has a 6-1/2 inch barrel, was Magna Ported and someone had done an action job on it. It was so lite and smooth that I expected to have to replace some springs but it proved to be reliable.

My 629 does not have the full length barrel lug so it's not as front heavy as I would like. And while it wears the factory wood grips, when I shoot it I put on packmyrs because well full house magnums just aren't fun with wooden grips against bare skin.

My first .44 Mag was a 629 with 6" barrel and I still have it. Two weeks after purchase a 29-2 6" came up for sale, I bought that one too. I'm at a point now where I'll be selling off just about all of my S&W revolvers that I've accumulated over the years, the only one I'll keep is the 629. Stainless is just so much easier to take care of.

Very cool, congratulations on getting a truly iconic revolver!

The .44 is an easy round to reload, I cut my teeth on it and .45 Colt because buying feed for my cowboy guns got expensive. If you do reload, the .44 can go up and down the power spectrum from very mild paper punchers to hand slapping bangers quite easily. If you don’t reload, ammo is still $$, so be prepared to spend a bit to play. 😞

I have a few N frame S&W’s, a couple of 629’s and a 624 .44 Spl. along with a 57 .41 mag. All but the 624 wear Hogue rubber grips, as over .40 caliber magnum recoil and wooden grips just don’t mesh with my palms anymore.

Can’t wait to see the gun and hear how it shoots for you when you finally get it!

Stay safe.

I wish S&W hadnt done away with the square butt frames and gone all round butt on everything. The bigger frame guns just look better and feel better in the hand to me with the square butts. Especially with the Magna type grips above.

Nice! That SS one with the white grips looks too cool too!

Load up some 44 Special loads using Unique and shoot ALL day with the biggest smile on your face! It also won't beat the crap out of the lock work ... S&W trained on revolvers, so yeah ... I've seen it!

I've carried a model 29 in the woods for over 40 years, several of them in Alaska. I went with a 4" model for ease of carrying, but now that I usually shoot it at the range, I wish I had a 6" model. Enjoy your new toy!

I just acquired this 3” for bear protection when out and about in the woods or fishing. Replaced the “purdy“ wood grips for better recoil management.

I always lusted after a 29, the movies got me interested, but I never have had a 29, but I do have a 629-1 that I admittedly bought on impulse one day when I saw it on GB. I prefer my Dan Wesson 44 to it to shoot, but I give the 629 the edge, looks wise. I like the plum color on the DW though.

A 629-2 was the first firearm I bought.
Bought new in '90 at 18 years old.
Took the paperwork home to have my dad fill it out for me and when he was done, pulled $400 out of his wallet (that's what my FFL charged back then) and told me to order another one when I took the paperwork back.
His was a -3.
Still have them both

Here is my Mountain Gun, a round butt that I converted to square butt.

I fashioned the conversion stocks by adding a bit of material, in this case elk antler, to the square butt magnas as a filler. I have not added filler to the toe of the stacks.

I have a 629-5 with the 6.5" barrel, full length underlug. It shoots quite well but does better with mid range loads than heavy loads, compared to my other 44 Mags. Mine is a round butt so I installed the X frame rubber grip from S&W and the recoil isn't too bad.

Good luck with your new revolver.

Very nice. They're all nice. Here's my -3 8" with recessed cylinders, sporting a Sig Romeo sight. Took picture after a hog hunt so it's not too clean.
