getting ready for my last gun of the new year purchase, I've decided thaat i would like to have one of the new night guard revolvers that s&w will be releasing next month but can't decide which one (though I am leaning torwards the 325 as i don't have anything that uses 45acp) but otherwise have no preference.

once again I look to you all because the collected knowledge found on thehighroad never ceases to amaze me and you guys have never given me bad advise.

I would like more than one too. The first choice for now is the 386. I also would like the 315 and the 329 versions. These will make great carry guns IMO.

I voted 386, because I'm not sure the N frame based ones would be quite concealable enough for carry.

If concealability is less of an issue, then I'd probably go 325 or 327, with the 327 having the advantage due to the 8 round capacity.

i voted 396 the 44special
my favorite revolver is a S&w296 (5 shot concealed hammer 44spec aluminum titanium) it fits perfectly in back pocket of jeans with just enough of the handle sticking up to grab with pinky and draw it ( i use small cardcarrier with clip wallet infront pocket) so the 296 rides in my wallet pocket
curious though my 296 has a max bullet weight of 200gr due to the unfired bullets will jump the crimp its its only 7 ounces lighter than this new model396 is that enough extra weight to fix that? also if the 45acp is holding 6rounds its in the larger frame
i usualy use cci blaser 200gr (has aluminum case -even lighter) but doubletap now offers a 44spec thats pretty hot
thats just my preference but im willing to bet that when this poll is over my choice will be the lowest picked option
and i suspect the 45acp will win out
its a great gun near identical ballistics to a 44spec its slightly larger but holds one more round and it uses moon clips someguys love those -also the 45acp is the cheapest to fire round out of the guns mentioned
now for the one they didnt make --- i think a 10mm offering might be a hot seller its ballistically superior to all rounds here sans the 44mag and maybe just maybe they could get 6 rounds in the Lframe

1 - 325 NG to go with my SW1911 & 625 5" in .45 ACP as
I have a good amount of that ammo, a good amount of full moon
clips, as well as .45 Auto Rim ammo w/HKS Speedloaders.
I'd use it as a CCW

Th Magnum offerings in the NG line just don't seem like a
great idea with weight and Bbl. Len. imo

The 396 is interesting but I'd have to have a screaming deal
on it to justify a new cartridge and reloads would be
slower than Full Moons in the 325 .

The 315 Wish Item raises a question

Are there any current K frame Scandiums?

315 sounds nice but but it doesn't fit - the Combat
Masterpiece has adjustable sights and the
NG line has the Cyl. and SLide Extreme Duty
fixed rear. How about 313 ?

Heck a Night Guard on the J frame chambered
for the .327 Fed. Mag. make it a 6 shooter. what
about 18 oz.?

I like the idea of a 310 but just shoot .40 S&W
to save the wrists, and eyes from the muzzle flash of
10 MM.

another thing why is the .41magnum always left out of these fun creations ithink it could go 6 rounds in a L or 7 in a n

I didn't list the 315 on account of it wasn't listed n the website so I wasn't sure if they pulled it from the line for some reason. also I as told that none of these revolvers would have moonclips for the sake of cutting down the cost of production, I know that this is true of the 327 but I'm not 100% sure about the 325.

The 396 (5-shot L-frame .44 Special).

Though all the Night Guards sound cool, there's only one I'm really thinking about dropping the cash for.

Why? Because I love the sights S&W is putting on the NG revolvers, I wish I hadn't missed the 696 back in the day, and finally, in the words of TV host Michael Bane, "I believe in .44 Special like some folks believe in Elvis."

Probably my favorite cartridge.

I also missed a 696 and regretted it. I STILL want a 696 but will "settle" :scrutiny: for a 396 Night Guard.

However! It's tough for a Certified Old Fart to spend $1,000.00 for a revolver that has a $13.00 set of neoprene grips and a single tritium ampule at the muzzle when two more at the rear sight sure would help!

I might just continue my Quest for a virgin :what: 696. I enjoy the feel of steel. I know the limits and durability of stainless. I already know how to tune/break in the "old" guns.

Ever wonder why the prices of old Smiths keep goin' up? I'd pay a BUNCH of cash for a clean 696 right now!

wow im really shocked about how well the 396 is hanging in there
why did the 296 fail? 5 shot concealed hammer 44 special and its only 19 ounces

I'd be torn between a 396 and a 325 if I were offered the choice. My leaning toward those two is based on caliber. .45 ACP and .44 Special are both low pressure large bore cartridges which generally leads to reduced muzzle flash & muzzle blast when compared to higher pressure rounds like .357 Magnum. This lower flash/blast factor ties into the Night Guard line's named purpose.

I like the 396 because it's an L Frame, and would be easier to carry than the larger N Frame 325. Like def4pos8 I also missed out on the 696 and I think a .44 Special L Frame would seriously rock.

I like the 325 because I shoot mostly .45 ACP in my pistols and I wouldn't have to add another caliber to my ammo stocks. The speed & ease of full moon clipped .45 ACP reloads is another pro.

I suppose a 386 loaded with .38 +P would also give me reduced flash/blast, keep me in the L Frame size, and keep in the caliber I shoot most in revolvers.

There, I've effectively argued for three of them. :banghead: I guess I'd get the 325 to have another .45 ACP revolver though.

the 357mag is a high speed round so the 2.5 inch barrel affects its functioning alot more than it does the 44spec and 45acp

I am picking up a 386NG to compliment my 386 Mountain Lite. The shorter barrel and fixed night sites make it more desirable to me for primary carry. I will probably buy a 396 because I like 44 Special also.

I want one of each!
Since that ain't too likely to happen, I'll settle for a 396.
