I want a hammer-fired single action (only!) 9mm full size semi-auto pistol capable of Condition 1 carry. I will use this pistol to shoot at least 5000 rounds per year. I do not want a striker fired or DA/SA pistol; I already have plenty of those.

What are my options, other than a 1911 or HiPower?

What platform will likely give me the longest lifespan (as measured by irreparable frame deformation)?

i suggest that you look into the SIG p226 x-five, it is sinlge action, with manua safety, hi cap, threaded barrel, accurate , and reliability wise it is a sig, what more can be said.

There are a lot of 1911 variations. I like the STI offerings on paper, but have not tried it personally.

I could also think of:
HK USP
HK P7
CZ 75B

I own the Hi Power, a Les Baer PII (1911), and a S&W 952-2. I also own a Cz IPSC Standard in .40, which is the predecessor to the Tactical Sport, which comes in 9mm as well as .40.

I do not expect any frame issues with any of the 9mm, and would be surprised if there were any with the .40.

I like the safety set up on the 1911 the best. All are accurate and reliable. The Hi Power has the worst trigger. It's not bad, just not in the same league as the others.

That can be remedied by a good gunsmith. My dad's reworked BHP trigger with mag safety removed is comparable to a 1911. I agree that the safety switch is still not as good though.

My gunsmith considers himself good, and has a Hi Power of his own. His report is that he cannot get a Hi Power trigger to break like a good 1911 because of the different mechanisms involved. Maybe there are smiths who can.

Sorry, I should have said comparable to a stock 1911 trigger (modern 80 series type). A 1911 with a trigger-job is something else, I have a Colt 70 series Gov.

Actually, why bother with the SA only version of the CZ75. The standard model can be carried cocked and locked so you don't have to use the DA feature if you don't want to.

If you remove the magazine disconnector, a useless feature, in the BHP, you can get a very good trigger. A trigger stop also helps a little.

For SA carry, if you don't want a 1911, I'd look at the CZ's and the BHP.

I like 1911's and have carried one off and on for the past twenty years. I finally got my first Hi Power for Christmas. :D I've been shooting a buddy's CZ's and I'm pretty impressed with them.

The only advice I would give in regards to CZ is, get the 40 S&W. Then you can get a 357 SIG Barrel and a 9mm "Down Barrel" and shoot three calibers from the one gun.

I like the SA capability of the CZ's and sort of consider them a "knock off' of the Hi Power w/o the magazine disconnect safety. I'll leave mine in the new BHP because I will carry it off duty and disabling a safety device in a gun is like cutting the brake lines in your car, if you are carrying for self defensive purposes and realistically consider all that may happen post shooting.

I do have guns that have had certain safety devices altered or rendered inoperable, but those guns are for Range Use ONLY.

Can't go wrong with a choice between:

Browning Hi Power
CZ-75 SA
1911 in 9MM
HK P7

Pick what fits your hand the best.

Of all these platforms, what is the consensus as to which would be longest-lived?

i personally think that the sig would out last all the other options, and probally equal if not out perform them as well in accuracy and reliability too. one of the reasons i recommended it the way that i did.

1911 in 9mm would be neat, a cheap way to shoot a classic design, however the 1911 is best IMHO in .45acp as that is the way they were designed. getting mags also might be an issue.

I didn't see the Taurus PT-92 mentioned so I thought I would add it to the list of those guns already listed. I bought one for my son several years ago and have found it to be a very reliable and accurate 9mm. pistol. I especially liked it for the ability to carry it in Condition 1, as well as having the option of using the safety as a decocker. The gun has been flawless in its performance and I have no doubt it will perform as well for many years to come

Mags for 9mm 1911s are not an issue. There are the Springfield 9 rounders, Wilson and Tripp 10 rounders. I prefer the Wilsons.

Not yet mentioned are the Beretta 951 "Brigadier" and the Egyptian "Helwan" copy. I don't recall seeing a Brigadier for a long time, but I see Helwans at gunshows all the time.

CZ75B/SAO around 450-550

Great gun given what you want to do with it, its my favorite gun.

It will outlive you.

Get a P7PSP or if you want the classic, go for a Sig 210. I have several of both and use the PSP for carry and the 210's for target shooting. From your description, it sounds like you really want a SIG 210.
