Got my Cabela’s turkey day sales paper today
And all of the 1851s will be on sale for $50 to $70 less

I was hoping to get a Pedersoli 1861 Springfield.

I have wanted one for awhile, but somebody told me they are often on sale at Thanksgiving, so I have been waiting.

I'm hoping to I can snag a Griswold .36 for black Friday or otherwise get a good deal on one.

I'd like to patina it and shoot it.

Cabela's has not listed them even at their retail price for about 2 years, and I really think Pietta is not offering the G&G any more. I got mine from Cabela's two years ago at this time of year for $220 and the supply seems to have really dried up. The most recent source for one was EMF and that was several months ago.

I have heard shipping costs from EMF are fairly steep.

Good luck, sir!

Jim

Brass framed revolvers look good after they are aged a bit.

Yes! I love the patina they get from even one range session. I plan to age mine a bit so it looks like it's seen some service through the war, but not make it look 150 years old if that makes sense. It's jut that the modern dark black bluing they use on these guns looks totally wrong. They never looked like that, even from the factory they used a different less durable bluing back then.

Actually the charcoal bluing Colt used before WWII was more durable than the hot salt bluing of today. People seem to judge the old charcoal bluing by what Uberti markets as charcoal bluing but in fact, it is not even charcoal bluing but nitre blue. A completely different finish from a completely different process and it is quite fragile. Real charcoal bluing (carbona) as done by Turnbull is quite durable.

When you do we'll have to see about getting together and going Dueling Springfields,

So is this the same rifle ?
I don't know much about these things. I want to buy a close to authentic civil war rifle, and I want to shoot it extensively. In fact, I have considered buying an original. But, I wouldn't buy an original, sight unseen. I would have to inspect it myself. I learned my lesson with my Trapdoor. It is a nice looking rifle but the bore.......is almost smooth bore. I slugged the bore and there was almost no rifling on the slug. Ok if I just wanted to display an example of a Trapdoor, but I want to shoot them. For accuracy (not just to hear noise and see smoke).

I am not buying this as a collectors item, or for display, or reenacting: I am buying it as a shooter. But, I would like it to be authentic as possible and I obviously want fairly high quality.

Like anything, I have found that I know only enough about stuff to be dangerous. Insiders, guys really into this stuff, feel free to give me advice.

Should be the same Pedersoli my wife got me from Cabela's for my birthday. ;)

It's a nice rifle. I cold blued the "white" steel and will refinish the stock in the off season to make it look a little more aged.
