I'm looking to rebarrel my model 12 chambered in 300wsm. I'm planning on just having the 'smith put a proper shoulder and do away with the barrel nut system. Has anyone else done this? How fat does the tenon need to be to have enough of a shoulder?

Just because it's going to be custom chambered from a blank rather than a pre-fit. It seems unnecessary to worry about the barrel nut at this point.

The small shank Savage action is 1.35” OD, you’ll want to be no larger than that. For my money, I’d simply buy a standard 1.20” or 1.25” blank, and leave the small step. The recoil lug is already a step down in diameter from the action OD anyway.

700’s use a slightly larger barrel thread than Savages, and they run 1.20” and 1.25” shoulders, so running the same blank in a Savage would have ~10thou more shoulder than every Rem ever built.

If you have a large shank Savage, then a larger diameter blank would be necessary, as the action thread is 1.0625”.

It's going to be another 300WSM but throated for 215 or 230 grain Hybrids, haven't made up my mind yet.
It's a large shank action, so 1.25" shank or larger?

Not to derail this thread but question for Varminterror what is the difference in small shank and large shank savages and how would I tell on my model 10 which one it was?

I flubbed my math earlier - I typed 1.125” for large shank, which is 1 1/8”, whereas the Savages are 1 1/16” = 1.0625”. So a standard 1.20” or 1.25” blank would be fine for the Large shank Savage. Rem 700’s are 1.062”-16, Savage WSM’s are 1.0625-20.

@troy fairweather dropped the photos and dims of the barrel nuts above. The WSM’s and select magnums were done on large shanks, the rest small. Usually if a guy has a large shank, they know it.

i sold my savage 114 300rum last year, it was a early gun with the small shank, if it was the large i would have keeped it. wanted to do a 338 edge.
