Hi
Could anyone tell me how the plastic grips are fastened on an old
model Savage pistol ?
Down a few posts today there is a pic of one
the thread is Gander mountain finds .

Thanks , Bill

They are held in the frame by rails that snap into matching grooves. This might have worked once, but now the material they're made out of is very fragile, and often crack if someone tries to remove them. Unless it is absolutely necessary it is best to leave them alone.

Hi Thanks

I just got it today nothing looks broken on the grips
but they must be. One was all the way off other one very loose
just came off .

There's a guy in the Midwest who is an absolute expert on these guns. He found me an extra mag for mine and a spur hammer to replace the burr hammer and he installed it for me when I had trouble with it. Do a google search on savage 1907 Koch and I bet you come up with his website. I think his name is Koch but if you don't find him, tell me and I'll dig through my old stuff and find it.

These are great little pistols, very advanced for their time, lots of fun to shoot and I think it's kind of cool to have a pistol made by someone who is primarily known for their rifles.

Check the collector forums, too. I know there's one for Savage.

Good luck, let us know what happens.

Bill, replied to your email just a bit ago. Before you try to put them back in you might try gently heating them with a hair dryer to reduce the risk of cracking.

Thanks everyone

Grips must be definetly broken .
Thanks Browninguy I found the Savage pistol site.
Never would have figured how to disassemble myself .
Guess I am going to try the Brownell's grips .

You just made me very happy...I inherited one of these a few years ago and other than cleaning it, I have not shot it...it is missing the front sight but looks like it may never have been shot...nearly new...
Thanks for the info.
Bill

Now you've done it, Cocked&locked, you posted a pic. OK everybody lets see your 1907s!

Here's mine, made in 1919.

Thanks Everyone ,

Got my new replacement grips from Brownell's today .
They fit great , Man were they tight slipping them on
I was afraid of cracking them but all went okay .

Unlike old black hard-rubber grips (sometimes called "gutta percha") that becomes very fragile with age, modern plastics used in making reproduction stocks are much more flexable. Because it is becoming increasing hard to find uncracked or unchiped original hard-rubber stocks for any of the vintage guns that came with them, it is important that gun owners treat the originals with great care. Don't remove them unless you have to, and again, be careful when you do.

I found this thread a bit late...

I love these little pistols (just check my sig line). Here's one of mine:

I actually took the grips off of mine before Old Fuff had a chance to beat me up for it. Fortunately, I heated them with a heat gun first and managed to get them on and off without breaking the little tabs that hold them on.

I'll also add that if you have one of the barrels with a loaded chamber indicator, be very careful with the ring. They are also prone to breakage and you'll have a hard time finding another one. With a loaded chamber indicator and a double stack magazine, these little guys were very much ahead of their time.
