Hello all, looking for scope wisdom.

I picked up a used Browning BLR in .308 at a show today. I am very happy with both the gun and the price. I want to put some nice glass on top for deer and hog hunting.

I tend to prefer longer glass, so am thinking of a Leupold VX-3 3.5-10x40mm. Should I drop down to the VX-3 2.5-8x36mm?

As for mounts and rings, has anybody fitted Leupold QR rings to a BLR? Leupold doesn't list a quick release base for the BLR. Otherwise I'll use a pair of Weaver no. 25 bases I have in my parts box and use QRW rings.

BTW, there is one scope available on a site that I use for glass, so any *quick* advice would be appreciated.

QR rings tend to be heavy; unless you're really planning on pulling the scope of regularly I'd stick with non-QR rings.

I have found that I shoot better with lower-power scopes, and where I hunt can often find me moving between fields via thickets. Having jumped a couple of deer in the thickets and found myself a bit over-glassed at short range with a 3x-9x, I have settled on the VXIII 1.75x-6x as my ideal scope. Unless you're regularly shooting past 200 yards, I dunno why you'd want anything more than 6x.
