Scope question

I want to scope a Remington 700 SPS I have. The scope that came with it just does not suit my wants or needs. Problem is I don't want to spend much $. Question is what would be the best, a Barska Varmint 6-24X50 or Tasco 6-24X42? The Barska is $70 and the Tasco is $90. I want to stay below $100 if I can. Any other suggestions?

What caliber is the rifle? Do you really need 24x?

Also, I don't think $100 is enough to buy something better than what it came with.

What is you intended use for this rifle? For most hunting, that's too much scope.

Sorry, the rifle is 223. I will use it for paper punching and varmint hunting. FWIW, as cheap 4-12 no brand scope came on it.

What's wrong with that scope? If it works, I'd stick with it for now. The two choices you listed aren't all that big a step up. Later you might want to go for something like a Leupold or Burris for a couple of bills or more.

As far as cheap scopes go, I love my BSA Platinum 8x-32x-50 (at least I think it's 50?). Little to no run-out, pretty clear (for the price), does the four-corners thing pretty well, came with some nice extras. The parallax is a little off however. It works, mind you, it's just a little off. For 100 yds you have to set it a bit over 100, etc. The turrets are finger-adjustable and very repeatable.

The scope that came with my 700 is now on a Savage 30-06 that shoots like crap anyway.

Don't buy cheap scopes. Good reliable scopes can be had for $200 maybe a little less if you look hard. Stick with Burris, Nikon or Luepold and you'll have a good scope that will hold zero and have real life time warranties.

Years back I had a Tasco 10X or 12X. I can't recall which it was. It never lost its zero. Don't overlook the lower powered scopes with target turret or mil-dot. If you want a high power, high quality scope, check into the BSA 36X. I have one, and it is fantastic.

I also have Leupolds, ACOGs, etc. You can pay a lot more, but I'm not convinced you can get much more for your money than a Tasco. I am proud to say I put my money where I suggest.

In closing, run-out is the real concern when you get into low-end scopes. Run-out refers to the scopes ability to retain its zero as you repeatedly run the scope from say 4X through 16X (its full range) time-after-time. Even my $800.00 Leupold has run-out. All variable power scopes have some degree of run-out. For that very reason, I really prefer the straight X-power scopes, i.e. 4X, 6X, 10X, 16X, 20X.

You don't need a 24x scope for a .223-over 9 or 10x is not necessary.
I would advise you to try the scope that came with the rifle, make sure everything is tight, take it to the range and learn the gun with that scope.
FWIW, I have 2 old Tasco scopes (about 10 years old) that have been on many different rifles over the years, and still work great , clear and accurate.
One of them is on my old Savage .243 right now.
They are better than any Bushnell I have ever owned.

Hey sigma,
I'll tell you the same thing that was told to me when I posted the same type of question. A gun will usually shoot where you aim it. Spend less on the gun and more on the quality optics!!!!
I bought a 700 sps this past year and I have still not scoped it yet. I know what I want and that is a leupold 3-9x40. One of the best scopes for the $$$. It runs bout $300. I got the gun early to avoid the price increases later. Scopes are not increasing in price like guns are.
I would use the scope you have for now until you can afford a QUALITY scope like a leupold or a burris.

Doc 2005 you probably had a super sniper, made by tasco. The quality went down for several years then SWFA bought the "designs" to the scope and have been producing to the original standards. There is a good article on the super sniper at snipershide. I am gonna get one for my savage as soon as I can get the cash.

The only thing you would need a scope like that is for prarie dogs at 600yrds or so. If your range is out to 400yrds and your shooting say a groundhog, a 3-9pwr will work fine. A 10pwr will also do the trick. Many long range competitors actually use fixed 10 pwr scopes for 1000yrd shots. I would get a variable pwr scope though seeing as how you can have shots range from 25yards up to 400yrds if that is your intended range.

I have the Barska Varmint 4-16x50 on my 7mm08, and it seems to hold zero just fine... Althouhg, I do think I got too much scope, I rarely turn it out past 8-10x... I also have a Barska 4x on my .22, for over a year now, it's held zero just fine...
