I really like the Leupold VX-R scopes because they are just like a regular high quality scope with the option to turn the fire dot on in the center of the reticle. I'm not sure how much I would actually use it so I was wondering if there were any scopes with similar options in a cheaper price range. I like the leupold because if your battery dies or if you do not wish to use the firedot it is just like a regular scope.

Prism sights from burris or primary have etched reticles that work either illuminated or not, if you like the vxr but are looking for something cheaper check out their mark ar scopes with the firedot.

Don't all scopes that have both magnification and illumination work that way?
Hawke makes scopes with illuminated reticles in various price ranges.

Most of the illuminated scopes I have looked at have a significant negative impact if the battery were to die. The Leupold has quality as good as the vx-2 line with the firedot turned off. Optics Planet recommended the Sig Sauer Whiskey 3 with Hellfire as a similar option. It is close to $175 cheaper but I haven't heard much about them.

I have a VX-R on my AR and my son has a Burris Fullfield TAC30 on his. The reticle on the TAC30 is usable with no illumination. I've looked through every illuminated reticle scope that Cabela's offers and haven't seen anything that comes close to a VX-R for the same price or less. YMMV.

I don't use the illumination on my VX-R as much as I anticipated but it is nice to have.

Vortex PST scopes are just as good. While I have been utterly underwhelmed by Vortex's cheaper offerings, the PST series optics are very nice.

We'll have to agree to disagree. I don't believe them to be as good as a VX-R. Where I worked we had several PST's brought back with illumination issues and no VX-R's. Your eyes may be different but I found the VX-R illumination better in daylight and I also like that a VX-R switches off after five minutes of being motionless and switches back on if the scope is moved.

It is true, PST's do not have bright daylight illumination brightness, however, I dont find the need for illumination in bright daylight with my Leupolds OR Vortex. I was mostly referring to the optical clarity.

That's good to know. I guess I'll hold out a little longer and just get the vx-r. I won't be happy with anything else since I've set the bar with the vx-r. It's going on a newer mini 14 that has excellent accuracy. I just have to decide if I want the 2-7 or the 1.5-4.

I have a 2-7x33 with Firedot 4 reticle. I wanted to be able to reach pretty far out for coyotes. It isn't my primary varmint gun but I like to use it occasionally.

Look into the primary arms 1x6 or 1x8. The have an etched recital and illumination. ACSS recital is useful imo

I use basically the same set up ; that 2-7x33 VXR in La Rue mounts with a Doctor Optic RMR off 45 degrees to right in GG&G mount on my high zoot Noveske DMR because I feel I would have to go to a 2-3K$ set up to get better. I am entirely satisfied with it, does every thing I would want, is lighter than the other options and Leupolds bullet proof warranty :)

VX-R for me,own many. Go with 2-7 always good to have the extra magnification and not need it then to not have it and want it. 1.5 compared to 2 power at the low end wont be noticeable.
