I was getting some old cans ready to get scrapped the other day and saw a split case on the corner of my bench. Just wondering, anybody here save it to scrap out?

I buy & sell a lot of range brass. I take the damaged cases & squeeze the mouths with a set of channel locks and put them in a five gallon bucket. A five gallon bucket of rifle & pistol cases will weigh from fifty to sixty-five pounds.
At $1.50 a pound a fifty pound bucket of brass will bring $75.

I took some scrap brass to a local yard, don’t remember the exact value difference but they paid more for decapped . Otherwise they needed to cook it in case of a live primer.

Don't forget to add spent primers to the bucket. ;)

cost of gas is to much to drive to the scrap yard
Save enough spent primers and they may just pay for gas. :p

I take the brass for scrap along with my trip for soda cans/plastic bottles for CRV so no extra cost of gas.

BTW, CA may consider doubling CRV redemption for brief moment so keep an eye on it while you save your cans/bottles. (My average trips with truckbed full net $150-$200 so double CRV could be $300-$400 ... That will get you a ABLP/Pro 4000 or big chunk towards Dillon 550C)

A certain unnamed idiot (who shall remain my brother) has a furnace capable of melting the brass. He generally casts into "blocks" he can turn on the lathe. On occasion he freezes the metal into chessmen, light switch covers and various other "crafty" stuff for his wife. Although in the interests of fairness he did cast a medallion of St Elizabeth for me. (Patron saint of nurses and hospitals)

I take the damaged cases & squeeze the moths

Yeah, some of it is old, but no moths coming out....

And it may take years to pay off if one saves old, damaged brass.
But when a substantial amount is turned to cash, it is like a holiday!
I know what you meant and I now have almost a 5 gallon pail full of crushed mouth brass that will be going with me to the yard soon.
Plus over half a gallon of spent primers. And maybe 4 gallons of .22LR.

The recycling center is about a block away from Superior Shooters Supply In Superior, Wisconsin* (used to be kitty-corner from each other )
Guess what happens............;)

*about 2 and one half drive for me but it is worth the trip to visit multiple gun stores on the trip!

Hey,use care out there!

If they’re scrap I leave them at the range for the brass chickens. If they’re just unsafe for reloading I make them into something else - 9mm Luger to 9mm Makarov, for example, or pens, darts, letter opener things like that. I buy kits for pens and make from scratch for simple things.

This is made from a .30-06 case and a piece of bone. It comes as a kit with no body or ink cartridge. Pretty cool but I can’t take it to work. Somebody might be offended.

I use to deprime the range brass that I bought & sold so I have a fair amount of primers.

Some day I'll turn it all in and buy more range brass or lead with the scrap money so the brass scrap cash will make some more cash.

One of these days I'll weigh a pound of primers and count them to see how many primers it takes for a pound.

How many primers do you guys think for a pound?

Yes, I save & scrap the brass.

Primer cups are brass too.
CCIs are just nickel plated.

Last load was $1.86/lb
They used to pay closer to $4, but for some reason the price plummeted.
As far as gasoline to get their, just wait till you have a bunch to make the trip worthwhile.

I use to pick up can in CA for $.10 a pop! I would go to the Frat bins at Stanford and go to town. When Security checked on me, I showed my college ID and I lived on campus and they could do NOTHING. We were so poor then, wife was at school there.
