Do you all think that a 2" SP101 is enough smaller and lighter than a 4" Security Six to make it worth dropping about $400 on another gun and holster?

I carry the Security Six all day every day around my place and the countryside for snakes and other "varmits" ;) and sometimes it gets a little awkward and tiresome.

I would just get some kind of strongside OWB holster for the SP. Open or concealed is really not much of an issue since either one is legal outside city limits. There is always a loaded rifle around the house too ... the revolver is just for "sudden" situations.

I don't have the numbers handy but I seem to remember the 101 is rated at 25 oz while the Security Six is a medium weight, probably around 35 oz or a little more. It would be entirely up to you to decide if something over 1/2 pound is enough to make it worth spending the money. Some people sware they don't mind the weight, while others search long and hard for the lightest thing they can find.

It is indeed up to you to decide.

As Dave T said, there is a BIG difference in weight between the SP101 and the Security Six (around 10 ounces). A bigger spread would be going to one of the S&W lightweight J frames (around 15 ounces). So now we're talking a weight difference of 20 ounces (about the weight of most all small frame, all steel .38 snubbys).

There are lighweight S&W J frames available in that weight range for the .357 - but they are strictly carry a lot - shoot a little type guns. If you opt to go with a .38 instead, you end up with a more "managable" compact & lightweight gun - and the cost new difference is considerable.

For the purpose you describe, I wouldn't go with a barrel length under 3". I have a 2.25" SP101 - and it carries well and handles the .357 with realitive comfort. But if a .38 will fill your needs - you can get something even lighter and still able to shoot comfortably & accurately.

Yes the SP101 is significantly lighter and smaller than a Security Six. I own both the two inch and three inch SP101 and a 4 inch Security Six. I bought the 2" SP101 for the very reasons you are considering purchasing one. I liked it so much I bought a LNIB 3" SP101 when I found a good deal . I don't know which one I like best. They are definately the brawny boys of the five shot set, much like the Security Six is the muscle guy in the K Frame category. Pick any one of them up and you don't wonder where the beef is. The SP101 is heftier than the S&W J frame by several ounces. I didn't buy the "little" Rugers to pocket carry so I don't care that they are weightier than the S&W's. I carry them in a fanny pack ( here in the Pac. NW everyone from babies to grandma's wear them....as long as it's not tact. black I am not "made" ) or a High Noon IWB "Down Under". Either way of carry provides me comfort and ease.......but I wouldn't recommend them for "everyday" pocket carry...... the all steel .38 Special S&W J frames would be the heaviest I would tote regularly in a pocket, but an Airweight would be prefered.

Be forewarned, if you go and pick one up and look one over you are likely to buy ! They are terrific little revolvers.

I have one of each. The 2.25" SP101 weighs 25 ounces and the 3" weighs 27 ounces. A 2.75" SS weighs 30.5, IIRC. So, you're talking about a little over 1/3 of a pound. Leaving aside the extra 1/2" of barrel, the differences are really these:

1. the 5-shot SP101 is noticeably thinner than the Security Six

2. the butt on the Security Six results in a somewhat greater overall length, if barrel lengths were equal

I don't think there's a lot of difference, but there's always "just 'cuz" ;)
