I am about to try and sell a handgun online for the first time in the classified sections of a few forums and need some help and tips.

What legal info do I need from the buyer besides a copy of the FFL its getting shipped to?

Will the copy of the FFL have the buisnesses phone number and address on it?

Do they just mail this copy to me and then I ship the gun after verifying the FFL copy and address is legit?

Is this the best place to check the FFL? ps://www.atfonline.gov/fflezcheck/

Should I only accept money orders or cashiers checks?

Can I accept paypal since paypal won't no what the purchase is for (I do have a account that I use often)?

What shipping service is the best and cheapest for shipping a handgun?

Whats the ballpark cost to ship a handgun with shipping insurance included?

Even though I havent done any online gun sales I have sold over 100 items on ebay with excellent feedback but I just want to make sure I do this legally and don't get killed on shipping. Also I would be happy for any tips that you have, and sorry for all the questions.

There's a gun friendly version of Paypal, I'm sure someone will chime in. If they file a claim via Paypal, and paypal finds out it was for a gun, you will end up with a headache that is going to start with them freezing your paypal account.

Getting a money order / cashiers check requires cash. You are going to have more buyers if they can put it on a credit card, via Paypal, etc.

okay, I'll play.

Depends on YOUR state law.

Will the copy of the FFL have the buisnesses phone number and address on it?

Address, yes. Phone number, no, from what I have seen...although once you have the business name and address, finding the phone number is trivial.

Do they just mail this copy to me and then I ship the gun after verifying the FFL copy and address is legit?

Maybe. Some (many) FFLs will not send a copy of their license to an unknown entity (you). They will likely send it to your FFL--a more known entity.

I have also used this one: http://www.gunbroker.com/User/DealerNetwork.asp

Should I only accept money orders or cashiers checks?

That seems to be what most dealers prefer.

Can I accept paypal since paypal won't no (sic) what the purchase is for (I do have a account that I use often)?

No, Know, and Noe! Paypal will gladly suspend your account and freeze all monies in it (do a search and read the tales of woe...rhymes with no, know, and noe...) Play this game at your peril.
PS--do not financially support those who do not wish you well.

What shipping service is the best and cheapest for shipping a handgun?

I ship through my FFL, who charges me $15 plus actual USPS Priority Mail charges, plus actual insurance. Generally under $30 for a $500 gun.

Ship it yourself through FEDEX or UPS and you will pay $60 or more. Again, do a search and satisfy yourself.

Whats (sic) the ballpark cost to ship a handgun with shipping insurance included?

See above...

Ok what about if I list it a FTF in ky would that be just like me selling a gun to a person at a gun show or coworker? I know it would lesson my chances of a sell but it sounds like less hassle and a less chance of ending up in a cell.

I believe Gearpay (gearpay.com ) is what iiibdsiil is referring to as a Paypay alternative.I have used it several time and it is just like paypal, but was started specifically as a counter to paypals antigun policies and account freezing tactics. It takes a couple days for them to verify your bank account (YMMV depending on weekends and the speed at which your bank processes and posts electonic transfers), and then you can send and recieve funds from anyone with an email address and a Gearpay account.I would recommend them over paypal, and once set up is WAY faster and more secure and hassle free than money orders, checks, etc. My .02 cents.

Again, that depends on KY state law. FTF transactions generally do not require background checks and FFL transfers as long as you keep it in the state of your residence. Once you cross state lines an FFL is mandatory.

BATFE = An individual who does not possess a federal firearms license may not sell a firearm to a resident of another state without first transferring the firearm to a dealer in the purchaser's state.
This does not mean that you don't need an FFL in a FTF in-state transaction, there's just no federal regulation about it.

I would just get the FFL number along with the FFL's name and address.

The ATF web site should have at least a name and address on it. Hopefully these will match the name and address the buyer provided you. :scrutiny:

I would only take a postal money order.

wdlsguy has it right. You, as an individual, do not need a copy of the recepients FFL. You will need the #, and verify it with the ATF ez check. You can have a local FFL send the pistol, though that would require you to have a signed copy of the recipients FFL, since the dealer is sending it. Other route, is to send the pistol yourself, using a contract carrier, ie, UPS or FedEx. You CANNOT use the USPS.
