Shooting range turned me away - said i'm a suicide risk!

Maybe it had to do with you being from NJ:) I can tell I'm not suicidal I never even thought of people renting a gun and shooting themselves at the gun range.

Here in Illinois (I know it's not as bad as some states), I have to make 2 trips to the gun store (20-25 minutes away) to purchase any firearm. One to fill out the paperwork, and the other because of a waiting period on firearms purchases. I really wonder if the waiting period has done a darn thing to lower crime rates. If it hasn't, wouldn't it make sense to get rid of that dumb law?

That has always struck me as dumb, too. If you're a shooter, you already have several guns to choose from. While buying a new gun, the waiting period for a long-time gun owner proves nothing. If you wanted to do something nefarious, just reach into the safe.

Wow, I guess I could never shoot there at all as I shoot by myself almost always. I have noone to go and shoot with, so I go by myself and have almost my whole life. Maybe 6-7 times ever have I specifically gone with someone to go shooting.

When I go to an indoor range by myself, they laugh at me. That's because my monstrous range bag is so fulla pistols, ammo and etc., that I have to wheel it in on a luggage cart.

I do understand the OP was about traveling without your toys. We've had range suicides here in Denver too.

And FWIW, many years before she knew me, my wife's neighbor blew his brains out in front of his wife and kids, and Deb had to clean up the mess, there was nobody else to do it. That really destroyed his wife and kids' lives, whatta guy. As a result, my wife isn't really against guns, or anti, but she understandably doesn't want anything to do with them.

Guy at the counter was obviously an idiot. Thanks for the warning, I'll be sure to give my money to some one else.
Read the thread.

I did thank you, and I say the guy at the counter was an idiot. Unless the OP has some physical deformity or dresses like a slob and we aren't getting the whole story then that cashier is an idiot IMHO.

There was a gentleman I work with who just took one in the chest at home. I don't know how or why but he's in Tucson ICU right now, nobody in the world would pin this guy as the suicidal type, 5 kids pretty wife, easy going but that's what the theory is around the "shop." In any case he's lost his job because we carry side arms all day.

Crime Scene Cleanup (shudder) Been there, done that..

One of my many jobs involved disposal of materials removed from crime scenes, suicides, sudden deaths, etc. I won't elaborate on the details, but once I even had to strip/gut an entire office and destroy the contents. This fella was mad at his boss...

There were usually two kinds:

The polite, quiet ones who would spread a towel around themselves and stand in the bathtub at a hotel, so as to minimize the mess and inconvenience,

And the angry, loud, showy ones who would find a way to make it as messy and public as possible.

Shooting ranges are enormous draws to the latter kind, who hope that in death their lives will mean something, that it didn't while alive. At least they are remembered as "That guy that offed himself at the shooting range".

The thought processes of someone who has decided they are better off dead are hard to understand, and they are capable of looking and behaving quite normal when they have a goal.

Maybe the best tactic to resolve the issue of the range is to show them your NRA card, or an intinerary from your travel? I travel with a pistol everywhere except where forbidden by law, so this won't affect me...

Having lived in NJ 40 years ago for 3 years, I still have that stick an ice pick in my temple look.

The look never goes away for anyone who's lived there.

This morning, there's a U.S.A.Today article about the record-high suicide rates in Japan: 34,000 last year. They called it a suicide fad- they are inhaling this specific mix of household chemicals that kills them. It even forces everyone in the building to evacuate (and get sick themselves)! W.T.F. ?!

I would probably be upset if what happened to the O.P. happened to me, but ultimately I feel that a range has the right to refuse service to anyone for any reason. I actually think that should even apply to ANY business. I.M.O. only, Y.M.M.V. And suicide doesn't hurt anyone but the person doing it? W O W. Putting aside the most obvious and harmful effects of those connected, think about if someone did that on YOUR property... I'm sure the cleaning crew they pre-arranged to take care of their little mess should be by any minute!

I walked into the Bellevue range in time to catch their second suicide out of the corner of my eye. I was standing at the counter doing a rental when it happened.

Yes, it is a horrendous mess to clean up. Not to mention watching other shooters come out of the range covered in bone, brains and blood. The aftermath of such a shooting is beyond belief. I should have left immediately but was in such shock that someone would do this I stayed too long. I, along with everyone else there that day, was questioned three times by three different people. You would have thought one of us pulled the trigger the way we were treated. What was going to be a quick trip to try a couple of different guns turned into a ten hour ordeal.

I'd been in many times before and, prior to my move to MO, many times since this event. I understand perfectly why they do this and respect their policy. Its their business; they rent and allow the use of weapons on the premises. They run a very nice, upscale, clean, well ventilated range and cater to everything from Microsquash millionaires to Joe Blow. They intend to stay in business and have done this to protect themselves.

To call the clerks idiots for following the policy of the owner says something about you who are doing the name calling. Put yourself in the owner's shoes. If you would like to run a range, and let people indiscriminately come in and cap themselves, just how long do you think you'd be in business? Or out of jail maybe?

As a side note, I was in there about a month later over lunch to shoot. I was by myself and hadn't thought to bring a gun with me. The guy behind the counter was someone I'd talked to many times both at the Range and at WAC (Washington Arms Collectors) shows. When I asked to rent he asked if I was alone, and when I responded yes, asked how my mental attitude was that day. I was a little confused and then :what:. I had no problem leaving without getting to shoot.

I personally have seen the aftermath of three suicides in my lifetime. One with a shotgun and twice with a handgun. A girlfriend's father ate a 12 ga. and we found him on the stairs upon returning her home after a date. Fortunately she was behind me as I opened the door. I was able to quickly get her back outside and the door closed before she saw very much. For some reason she lost all interest in me after that. No one ever figured out why he did either. No note and no reason that anyone could ever come up with. Total mystery.

Second time I was a newly minted EMT and we were called to a "shooting". We get there, start grabbing gear, when one of the cops present told us to take our time as there was nothing we were going to do that would be of any help. We get upstairs to the apartment and find two plainclothes cop looking around at things, everything except the body in a chair with a handgun on the floor. I noticed two clean bullet holes in the spray with a third very jagged hole close to them. Since we were locked into being there until the ME office arrived I asked what they were looking for so diligently. One of the cops said "suicide note". My partner and I exchanged looks and I said but there are three bullet holes isn't that more like a murder. Cop shrugs his shoulder and says, "flinch marks". It took me a moment. I sat there and wondered just how determined you have to be to kill yourself to miss TWICE and then pull the trigger a third time.

I've been to Wades several times over the years, It's actually the first range I went to as a kid, and I've bumped into the owner at the WAC (Washington Arms Collectors) gun shows several times. Nicest guy in the world, offered me a discount on renting the FN 5.7 since I was considering buying but I wanted to test one out first. Nothing wrong with Wades. They're even one of the few gun stores that sell NFA items (well, we can only buy suppressors in the great state of WA).

It's just a policy that they don't want to rent guns to single people that don't have their own gear because as mentioned, they are one of the few gun ranges that cater to the Seattle/Bellevue area which means high traffic volume. Pretty much everyone who has the idea of offing themselves with a gun they don't have in Seattle is going to be looking at a place like Wades to do it.

Call it profiling or whatever, but realize this causes undue stress on the employees and customers at the scene of the sucide, not to mention red tape, police investigation, closing down the business for several days, etc. They run a very clean, nice joint. You'll often see Ferraris and Corvettes parked out front from clientele. You can think of it as discrimination but if this policy far outweighs the negatives of having to deal with a suicide case, then so be it. That's why we as consumers vote with our dollars and feet.

I did thank you, and I say the guy at the counter was an idiot. Unless the OP has some physical deformity or dresses like a slob and we aren't getting the whole story then that cashier is an idiot IMHO.

Gee, some people here are angry that they're being stereotyped as a suicide job and here you are throwing cripples and slobs under the bus as being worthy of being turned away?

Very odd I see this post today. I went to Wades yesterday, which was my first time at an indoor shooting range AND just today I was thinking about what they would say if you asked to buy just one round. Well, I guess I have my answer!

I know Wade's in Bellevue has had a couple of people rent guns and then go into the bathroom and blow their brains out. They have similar policies.

Exceptions?

I've seen a couple of posts asking if there are exceptions, such as evidence of current hometown range memberships (with corresponding hometown ID), Long-term or lifetime NRA membership, or current instructor certifications.

Can anyone with a local range with this policy check on this? I'm sure it varies by range, but we could get an idea of what docs might help get around the policy if traveling.

I often stop by the range in my hometown with nothing since I can't carry or even keep in vehicle on the property (subject for another post, everyone knows I am enthusiast, etc.). Range is on the way home.

I would just put up a sign "All suicides will be used for target practice!".

I'm amazed at how many folks flinch about thinking what happens to them post-mortem. I routinely make folks reconsider drinking without a DD by threatening to be rough on their body during the autopsy (ahh, the small joys of my job :)

The person who started the thread didn't mention the name of the place in his original post. He also said it was in Seattle so I assumed he was not talking about Wade's. I don't always feel like reading through all the posts before I reply. Looking through a 40 or 50 posts takes too long sometimes. OK?

Makarovnik, he was just pointing out it was Wade's we were already talking about, nothing to get upset about. Seems like something you might be interested in knowing. Saves you reading those 50 posts, eh :)

I have been to Wade's on vacation, fortunately I brought my own gun :)

There have been a few suicides at northern VA gun ranges as well.
