ive seen mention in a couple gun magizines of them using ammo for 3.5" .45acp seems like last time i saw it they were testing a wilson and ran a few rounds through it. cant recall for sure its been a while but now that i have a short barreled .45acp i was wondering what options are out there and if there is any real benefit from ammo that im sure is more expensive.

I handload so I suppose I could go with a faster powder than unique but that works well in all my 45s, including my 3 inch kimber. I do not think it would be worth it myself.

the only one I've come across was a Gold Dot load, I've only seen it in 20x chump boxes and my Citadel 3.5" (that is not generally ammo picky) did not like it for some reason. That gun likes regular Gold Dots, so I was stumped and didn't bother investigating more. I think I used that box up as a malfunction-inducing training round, it was that bad in that particular gun.

thx i havent seen any in my local stores and was just a bit curious. for some reason that stuck with me.

Well there's the Gold Dot short barreled load, you'd be best served finding that (or any Gold Dot) in the 50 round 'law enforcement' boxes, easiest to do online. If they package that load in the 50 round boxes it's significantly cheaper than buying it in the little don't have internet boxes.

Otherwise, the Federal HST is a particularly reliable expander and opens well at any reasonable velocity, that would be my pick. Oh and it's also cheaper than pretty much every other premium JHP. You do have to find it online sometimes, local shops may or may not have it, and price comparing is always easier from your living room anyway.

Price comparing IS easier online, but in every instance I've checked, the shipping cost was more than the ammo. How/where do you buy that's less expensive than OTC?

More than a box at a time I guess. I use www.ammunitiontogo.com, www.georgia-arms.com, www.tds-us.com, or MAH distributors.

You don't buy all your groceries at the gas station, just the items you need for that given day, because it makes more financial sense and gives you many more options to go to the supermarket and buy groceries in advance. Ammunition is the same way, only it never goes bad.

I'd say if you can't afford to get a few hundred rounds or more in one go, carry whatever you've got on you while you save up some money. Fiscal responsibility allows us to make the best purchases instead of constantly buying just enough to make it to next week, at inflated prices and reduced available stock.

I've had some bad experiences with local shops charging ridiculous prices and only stocking the little boxes of ammunition, at $30 per 20-25 Gold Dots, the internet catches up RIGHT quick on costs.
