Shorten n frame barrels

Tiger McKee of Shootrite in north Alabama has become known for his “Chopper” revolver conversions. While what you’re seeking is not that level of change to your sixgun, he might be willing to take the project on.

Not too hard of a job for a competent 'smith. I had my Model 29 8 3/8" barrel cut to 6" by mu gunsmith. Included saving the front ramp and sight and fitting it into the rib. My 'smith did this and the joint at the base of the sight ramp was barely noticeable. This ran $150 some years ago. And well worth the cost. An 8 3/8" full lug barrel was somewhat weighty!

N frame barrrels through the Mid 60’s had pinned on sight bases and then pinned on blades. Easier to do with one of those, but clearly not gonna’ work with your 629…

There may be other options, but after cutting, the new end of the barrel gets re-crowned and can then be milled for a new sight base. Interchangeable sights are a very nice upgrade to boot.

During the Covid pandemic, my K frame took Gary Reeder nearly a year to cut the bulged 8 3:8” to 5”, but it was worth it.

Front sight blade is removable, I have this ramp and a fiber optic blade. :)

The gun shoots very well and balances perfectly.

If I may disagree with you, but all of my S&W revolvers have the sight ramp integral with the barrel rib. all were integral, rib, and ramp. Here, as my Model 29:

And, while I'm in the posting mode, my 8 3/8" Model 28:

I want a Smith and wesson 629 half lug with a 5 inch barrel.

They never existed so who can make this possible?
The M629 Classic series offers a 5" full lug barrel. Order the barrel, have a smith cut the lug down and fit the barrel. S&W Performance Center might could do that too.
FWIW, the "half lug" is not a lug but a shroud for the extractor rod. It's a different shape from the lug.

Because you can’t just unpin the base on his629. Would have to be cut off and glued or soldered back on the shortened barrel.

Folks called gunsmiths have been doing it all the time!

I'm not sure if Reeder is still open. I seem to recall reading about them closing their doors. The revolver on the left belonged to my Grandfather. Back then it was a Smith and Wesson model unknown. I posted about it back in 2020.
