Shot a Sig P220 for the first time

Agreed, probably the best .45 ever made ( and the 9mm is pretty swell too- though rare). :)

Im partial to old German SIGs with the stamped slides (internal extractor), though the newest P220s (external extractor) are good too. The only ones to avoid are the transitional US-assembled guns with the milled slide and internal extractor. These had cycling issues which were never fully resolved. Otherwise, a truly wonderful weapon!

The P220 was originally chambered in 9mm. It was retooled for 45 ACP for the US market, because we love our 45 ACP. They are not rare in 9mm in the rest of the world just the US. I agree the older stamped slide with the internal extractors are the best of the breed. They balance better in the hand. IMHO

I find this curious. The only differences between the Model 220 and the Model 227 that I'm aware of are the magazine capacities (the Model 227 having a couple of rounds capacity more) and the attendant different size grips (the Model 227's being slightly larger in circumference). The grip size differences between the two pistols in terms of being an advantage or disadvantage is one of personal preference; the higher capacity magazine is always an advantage. In truth, I traded my Model 220 in for the Model 227 because I much preferred the slightly larger grip, which fit my slightly larger than "normal" hand better. Having two more rounds on board was just gravy or icing on the cake.

IMHO the P227 ruined everything good about the P220 platform. You gained capacity but lose everything else. Its like a double stack 1911. It alters the platform enough to make it undesirable for me. The single stack slim profile of the P220 is part of its appeal for me. Clearly YMMV but I personally think that is what killed the P227.

I have larger hands so the P227 fits me well. I really like my P220s but they are a bit small for me. I’ve thought about looking for thicker grips but I’ve just adjusted to compensate.

Different animals in my mind. Different enough that they can co exist. But apparently enough folks just like the P220 better.

I was excited for the 227 at first, until I determined it felt about the same as the 220 in my hands and only held 2 more rounds. So it seemed like a waste to have both. Add in the fact that I prefer SAO and a 1911 is pretty much the same since with a nicer trigger and still gets the 8 rounds made the 227 kinda pointless for me.

If they could have bumped it to 12 rounds maybe I'd have been pushed over the edge.

Or the aforementioned 10mm would have given me a solid reason to branch out.

Hmm. They felt different enough from the P220 that I noticed but it might have been the particular variant I tried. It was admittedly a few years ago.

Been thinking about a CZ 97 since they’re large.

Anyway, back on the P220.

Could be the E2 grips, which I generally dont like. If they made a 227 in Legion SAO I'd jump on one.

Been thinking about a 220 Hunter in 10mm.

I'm not used to shooting CZ's & Sig's but I've shot them both in 9mm. I found the Sig trigger much more comfortable & I shot the Sig better than the CZ. However I liked them both & I feel that if I practiced I could get accustomed to either one w/o any problem. For looks & grip feel I like the CZ & I also understand that the Sigs are much higher priced. I think both are excellent pistols & would be very happy with either one.
