#8, but I would REALLY want a barrel about 28 inches or longer for better swing dynamics - short barrels are fast to start swinging, and even faster and easier to stop when you don't want to
I'm a #7 1/2 guy just because it works and is easy to find, but #8 will certainly work about just as well. I've heard said that #7 1/2 is the better choice later in the season when they're flying higher, but I've never attributed any misses or cripples to shot size as opposed to me just missing.
Be sure to pattern your gun, my 870 patterns better with 8s. +1 on the longer barrel, my 870 Special Field has a 21" tube, very fast, but the swinging characteristics are poor. A 26 or even a 28" barrel will IMHO get you more birds.
