Show me your dangerous game rifles

Nice pictures everyone!

I don't really have a dangerous game rifle. I guess my Ruger #1 is the closest thing that I do have to one. They are strong enough to approach 458 Winchester levels if I was man enough to shoot it!

I really like the m70. I need to find a stainless action.
Ever have a religious experience just handling a firearm? Years ago, seems to me it was 2005, I handled a custom shop Model 70 in .375H&H. I think it was somewhere north of $3000. It sent a chill down my spine when I shouldered it. Was like they made it just for me. Everything about the way it fit and handled was perfect. Wish I had been able to buy it but alas, it was my first year self employed and I was broke as a joke.

I know the guy who owns Pondro Taylor’s 450 #2 NE. I’ve held that rifle in my hands on multiple occasions. He took her back to Tanzania and shot an incredible 52” hard bossed bull with it.

Everytime I pick that rifle up it gives me a warm feeling inside. If only that old rifle could talk.

This is my Ruger Guide Gun in .375 Ruger, with a Leupold FX-II Ultralight 2.5x20.

Anything that could be dangerous game wise in Pa. My 30.06's Mosin Nagant and 1891 Argentene Mauser would fit the bill. Also my Ruger SBH and 44 mag CVA hunter and Rossi 92 45 colt would be right behind them IMO.

I’ve got a spare one that is an almost identical twin. The difference being it has a non fluted 22” barrel. Same stock, action etc. I’m thinking about parting ways with it.

Just sayin’. ;)

PM me if you want more information.
I'll never have The money tho lol, if like to get one of the new ones someday, either a 7rem mag or a 375 if they still make them.

Is that Bill Jones?

Don't ask why ayone would have three .458 Win Mags, but here they are: At bottom is the one I took on first African hunt many years ago, built on surplus FN M-98 dressed up with pretty Pachmayer stock. Center is full blown custom job by Pete Grisel on M-70 action with drop-box magazine. Top is Ruger 77 I bought because of pretty wood. I previously had another Ruger 77 .458 that I gave to PH after very successful hunt, which my wife is holding in pic. 21A_5438 (2).JPG 21A_5442 (2).JPG 2Lions.jpg

As close to what I have.

Don't need somethin' that's "whalin" against my old shoulder bones in my late 60's. The old .270 Win, with hot handloads handles anything I care to hunt in my native Maine. One quick-shot kill on a pretty-big moose at about 275 yards with a 130 grain, hot handload did a fine job. As the song asks, "Who can ask for anything more?"

In my neck of the woods, there's nothing "dangerous" that can't be handled with a "normal" centerfire rifle or a shotgun with buck.
Do y'all ever have any credible panther sightings in your area of Florida? We have had a couple of 200+ lb Cougar sightings in the Northern part of Texas not too far from where my parents live, with one being run over on the highway unfortunately.

But I remember when I was a kid in the early and mid 70s, there was an old old man who lived next to my great aunt and uncle in San Angelo, TX, and he trapped wild animals for a living, particularly wild cats. He kept them in cages in his backyard and I remember him letting me get close to the cage of a panther he has trapped out in West Texas. It was the wildest, most feral thing I had ever seen, and I have no doubt it could have killed me with a flick of its paw if given the opportunity.

Now I imagine those cats can be dispatched with something far less than a dangerous game rifle, but not by me, I'll tell you that. If I see one in the wild, I'm knocking my hunting partner down and running the other way.

I live close to a long creek surrounded by a vast greenbelt running through Houston, and several times have looked out the back window and seen large Bobcats sunning themselves on the apron of my pool. I sure as heck haven't gone out to shoo them off. Live and let live, I say.

Interesting. I have been reading books by old time African professional Elephant hunters of the 1800's. They range from 4 bore black powder rifles throwing a 4 ounce hardcast bullet to 7 MM Mauser and more small bores when they became available. A surprising number preferred the British 303 with solids to the big bores. It is about expert shot placement at close range by very brave men. 415 Rigby is often mentioned as well. It makes Buffalo hunting with .50 cal Buffalo guns sound pretty tame.

Even the tiny 22 Savage HP has been used to take at least one tiger and one water buffalo. If i were the kind to try something like that, you can bet there would be a big honkin' 50+ caliber backing me up!
