SHTF additional weapon advice

Gotta getta .....

Glock. Smaller than a long gun, easier to conceal, wield and plenty o' problems for the fool at the wrong end. Although smaller framed pistols are easier to stash, the Glock is the goto as it has never hiccuped, never jammed and has only the trigger safety so it's always ready. Equipped with an internal laser, it even works in the dark. It's not the squirrels and rabbits I'm scared of.:what:

Thanks for all the advice, everyone. To answer your question, Jersey now, but if stuff gets real bad, will go out to the family farm in Montana. Looks like I need both. So, nobody thinks a centerfire bolt would be of much use? Can you hunt with a Saiga?

A CCW license for your locality IS the SHTF answer. 48 states and growing doesn't make it a right that might go away, it makes it a realization that good people are having to deal with this stuff now.

Gun? Glock 9MM's. Revolvers aren't high capacity enough. In a recent gun mag article, Glocks rated consistently in the top ten guns tested for hit probability. .45's did better, Glocks are much more affordable. 9MM is about the cheapest round out there - you can afford to practice, which is a requirement. Just carrying is useless if you don't know when it's necessary, and how to actually hit a target. And most double action revolvers don't hit that accurately, as the same article showed. It takes too much practice to learn how to keep from wiggling around. A laser to learn quicker is out of the budget.

Police trade-ins are an excellent value for the money. There are SIGs on the market now for $360. Check the gun trade advert magazines, or online guns for sale auction sites.

A good primer on the magazine rack right now is G&A's "Personal Defense" magazine. Everyone needs to refresh on Mas Ayoob's article on legal Do's and Don'ts. Sometimes, the REAL SHTF when the lawsuit is dropped on you, even though you thought you did it all correctly.

Running against the tide here but your thought of a Savage 110 is an excellent idea as a dead accurate out of the box gun and stoked with 308's will take coyotes, deer, black bear and if necessary boogermen at longer ranges than the AK's are capable of. Especially if you make it out to Montana.

You already have a shotgun and a 22 so if you can squeeze a 4th gun into the mix get a good revolver for its reliability, simplicity of operation and ease of maintenance. I Like them all from 22 to 44 Magnum, unlikely you need anything bigger.

For a combination of shootability and concealability get one with a 3" or 4" barrel and either 38 or 357 so you can shoot both calibers. For strictly protection and camp use I like 44's but my bedside gun is a 357 loaded with 38's, sufficient for bed to bedroom door range. For outside carry I load 357's with 158 gr HP's or SP's. Good holsters are a must. If the gun isn't comfortable or easy to get to you won't carry it, won't do you much good locked up in your closet or glove box.

You give up rounds with a revolver but unless you are a cop facing hold up men or a shoot out at a local meth house how often do you think you will need 15 bullets when 1 or 2 will do the job. Thats what your shotgun and rifle are for. Hopefully all you will need to shoot is a squirrel for supper or a deer for winter meat. I make my suggestions assuming you don't want to join the commando squad and go out looking for raiders and marauders but just want to protect family, self and property.

Since you already have a SG and Rifle I would absolutely recommend the addition of a handgun to your collection both for ccw and home defense as well as a secondary weapon should your primary fail you in a SHTF situation.

-Cheers

I would look hard and try to find a used Ruger .357 (Security Six) in the $300 range and then the best SKS you can get for what is left over.

Over at another forum, there was a series of threads by a guy in South America ( I want to say Argentina but I am not 100% certain) and he survived a basic collapse of the government. The thing that struck me the most were his statements about daily carry of a handgun EVERYWHERE. he had lots to say about battle rifles but he said that the weapon he relied on for daily protection ( I am saying to carry and have if needed, not to actually use) was a pistol that he could wear in a holster and carry everywhere and everyday. The Ruger I suggested is a great gun, built like a tank, often available in used condition for a good price and you get the bonus of being able to shoot either .38 special or .357 magnum. Both of those rounds are also pretty much available everywhere in the US.

The SKS would be a logical companion for the Ruger, its a well made, reliable rifle and would fill a niche out past the range of your shotgun. You can still get SKS's in the $200-$250 range and they have an almost fanatical following. ( I love both of mine!) They shoot the same round as the AK-47
(7.62x 39mm) and there are generally some decent deals out there to buy that round in bulk at a good price. Its NOT a 300 yard tack driver, but it is semi auto and easy to shoot and maintain.

As I am writing this, I am realizing that my original gun collection grew out of the advice I just shared with you. I started out with a S&W .357 revolver and a Chinese SKS back in 1992 and I still shoot both of those guns regularly.

Good luck and please post what you end up buying!
