Well - the wife is ganna get me any handgun I want & it's ganna be a Sig or an H&K.
I like both because I think they are awesome & reliable...

I like the H&K USP Compact Saftey/Decocker over the Sigs decocker only. That safe feature on the H&K is very important to me, but
other than that I like the Sig better in every way. I also hear that H&K has terrible customer service, and I'm not sure how Sig's is...

I own two XDs, a S&W 629, and Colt 1911... Not at all interested in Glock, so all you Glock guys save it for another thread:neener:

I'm a .40 cal lover, so the gun will be in .40

Thanks in advance for your input.

I say a Sig P229. You could put a nice Surefire light on it, or even get Crimson trace laser grips. I think they are smoother shooting and have much nicer DA/SA triggers, which leads to much better accuracy IMO.

I also like the safety/decocker of the USP..wish Sigs had the option of cocked and locked SA carry while still having DA restrike capabilities like the USPs. ;

Quality and reliability are impossible to compare since they are both awesome guns. You can't go wrong with either. I personally would take the USPc in .45 acp, and the Sig 229 in .40 so you can swap barrels and use .357 too. Good luck, and you're lucky to have a wife that would get that for you as a gift!

Both, I think, are superb firearms, durable, accurate, and reliable. I considered, briefly, writing a summary of why I, personally, prefer Sigs, when I realized that I could sum up my feelings on the situation with the help of a tv commercial I can't get out of my head:

H&K USP: wimpy wimpy wimpy

Sig P229: HEFTY HEFTY HEFTY

Both HK and Sig make great guns. But should you ever have a problem with your purchase, only one of them will talk to you.

Get the Sig.

:D +1
Both are great guns, I'm a bit partial to sig (I sell em), but I don't think you can really go wrong with either.

I have an HK USPfs 9mm. Also have two P226's, a P229SAS, and a P220. The H&K is a good gun, but I overwhelmingly prefer the Sigs. Just my opinion, but I think that the Sigs have (for me) a much better feel and I can shoot them much better.

Wouldn't this be essentially irrelevant if you purchase your firearm through a knowledgeable, friendly, certified armorer shop? Not just with these companies, but any company really.

I just bought an H&K, and it's an excellent gun. I can also take it to a great shop, who can fix any part of it should something go wrong. Not everyone is that lucky, I suppose.

I was looking at Sig, H&K and Glock equally, and went with H&K because it felt perfect to me personally, and was obviously finely made. I also noticed that the shop I was in sold many used guns, and there were plenty of Sigs and Glocks in the case, but not a single H&K to be found.

In the end, I don't think you could really go wrong with either. If you can't shoot them, spend a good amount of time with each model in hand, work the actions, try the triggers and see what fits best.

If the sig feels better to you in every way, I'd go with that. An external safety on a DA pistol is not much more than a "peace of mind" issue for users who aren't comfortable handling it.

Do you ever plan on carrying cocked and locked? If so, the safety is useful.

I carry an HK just about every day, but it is a P7. Given the choice between a USP or a Sig, the Sig grips fit my hand much better, so I'd go Sig. But that's only because it fits MY hand better.

I do own several varieties from both companies (P225, 226, 228, P7, USP Tac, USP CT, P9S, and I used to have a 220, 232, 239, and P2000) . . . it's hard to go wrong because they are all quality guns. If you can, try renting them both and seeing which one you shoot better.

Me, I prefer anything HK...been addicted since my HK 93  and my P7M8. As for my USPs, I have over 50k rounds through my USP's w/o a single hiccup w/ a variety of diff't brands of ammo. The 1 time I had to call HK c/s, my questions were answered promptly and to my satifaction -- IMO, that shouldn't be a concern!

The OP is in Alaska. Factor in shooting with gloves. HK USP and P2k series are designed for gloved use. Not sure if the newer Sig Arms classic line has "winter trigger guard" versions.
I would consider my HK USP as durable as my SKS. To me, Sigs feel slightly better in the hand than a USP, but still can't beat the pointability and ergonomics of CZ-75 series and Browning Hi-Power.

Another voter for the P229. The H&K usp compact In a .40s&w takes awhile to get use to. I have had mine for over a year and still shoot low and to the left. I can not find myself to trade it because it is an ss.

I have experience with the HK USP, HK P2000, and the Sig 229; all chambered in .40 S&W. Fairly god experience.

I like them all. They are all decent options.

I prefer the Sig 229 for its ergonomics and DAK trigger group. No reason besides preference.

Wow! It's ganna be a tough desicion, but I'm leaning towards Sig, and then I'll try to talk her in to getting me an H&K for Christmas : )

Local dealer has all but stopped selling the HK because of that very reason. That being said I have two P220's. The only problem I have had was when the night sites finally died out on the first one. $39 & CDNN ....problem solved.

Get the one that you shoot better.

They are both great guns that will outlast you. They are both equal in quality and reliability. The only advice I can give you is that if you shoot your 1911 alot, your thumb might naturally ride on the slide release of the Sig causing the slide to not lock back on your last shot. You'll have to adjust your grip on the gun.
Again - make your decision after you shoot both guns, not by what other people tell you to buy. Nothing worse then plunking down $700.-$900. for a new gun and finding out it doesn't fit you well.

I personally like Sigs better. They point more naturally for me. I owned an Hk USP Compact in .40S&W. The gun was a great gun, never gave me any trouble at all. The two things that I didn't like about it was that it didn't point naturally for me, and that you couldn't change the grips. I ended up selling it for a about $150.00 less than I paid for it - lesson learned :banghead:
Good luck!

BTW- Sounds like your wifes a keeper - make sure you take care of her :)

While I've only one chance to compare the H&K customer service to Sig's, my experience is exactly opposite of Mr. Kacerdias's. I had the same question to both and called them. H&K answered right away, I was transferred to tech support right away. I waited for about 30 mins of the pre-recorded assurances of my call's importance and me being next in the queue before finally giving up...

Just my 2 cents

SiGs just don't fit my hand, lovly guns, but HKs just fit me so well, and they are a superb pistol, overpriced maybe, but you rarely hear anyone complain about owning one.

I prefer HK myself. The HK is lighter and I prefer the grip angle to most other guns. The Sigs have great ergonomics and make great guns but I feel they are to heavy for concealed carry. Overall though you cannot go wrong with either gun.

One thing you should notice is that not many people have mentioned the Glock.
