Hi All:

I shot my new “Ruglin” 1894 .44 Magnum today and I love it! What a hoot, blasting plates and working that slick action. So much fun. Factory Remington 180 SJSP slugs really fly out of that thing, too.

The classic rear buckhorn sight is ok, but I am getting a Skinner express rear sight in the mail today. One factor I overlooked when ordering the sight was the front sight! I am imagining that I will need a taller front sight for this new rear adjustable peep. Has anyone installed this sight, and if so, did you replace the front? What height? Skinner makes many different sight heights so that’s good, but I want to get it right the first time if I can. I was shooting 180’s today but I will usually shoot 240 grain LSWC over about 19-20 grains of 2400.

Thanks!

Everyone wants to get it right the first time. That's why I have a tiny toolbox full of sights. So reread skinner info. Lots of info describing the process and talks about file to fit. Snatch and grab shopping is what I call it

Haha! I get it. Anyone know what the factory height is on the front sight of the Marlin from the factory? My digital calipers picked a fine time to die on me.

I have the Skinner on a Henry .44. I replaced mine with one a little taller than suggested by Skinner and filed it down to perfect it. I can't remember what height it was though. Skinner will help with suggestions...

I had the Skinner sight on a Henry 44 mag, I used their brass front sight. I put the peep in the middle of it’s adjustment range and filed the front sight down until it was hitting where I wanted it.

Thanks guys. I plan to put the express sight on today and will leave the buckhorn on; I’ll see if I can use the buckhorn to sight in the peep roughly. I love the look of a bead sight but the black patridge seems like the better choice for accuracy (and can be filed/blued if necessary).

I ran into the exact same problem with my Winchester Model 94 (Miroku). I bought the extra tall front sight and filed it down to where it was perfect. The sights are terrific. The front sight is tall so beware of snagging on things.

Holy Smokes! I just tried the Skinner rear peep on my 1894 and, even at the lowest setting, I’m going to need a skyscraper of a front sight to match it. I doubt I’d be able to use the front sight hood with a post large enough to work. Damn. Well a LNIB Skinner sight might be for sale at a discount momentarily.

Not a fan of Skinners for that reason.
I installed Marbles buckhorn front and rear sights on all my Marlins.
My son has a new Ruglin Trapper, with skinners on it same problem, you have to have a sky scraper front sight.
Not a fan.

I put a Ranger Point Precision sight on; doesn’t seem bulletproof like the Skinner but at least it’ll use the factory front sight. I’ll test it tomorrow.

I put a Skinner on my Henry 44 lever action. Added the tallest front sight they had, still wasn’t high enough.

Went with Ranger Precision, much better. I think the Ranger is built better too. The Skinner has the peep sight just sitting out there waiting to get knocked off. The Ranger has “wings” that protect the rear sight.

Just got a Ranger for my Henry 22 lever action.
