SKS for an Enfield No.5 MK1?

Just like Merle1 said "some of them got No 4 bolts when they were refurbished." Check the backside of the bolt to see is the SN# matches.
I have close to 300 guns in my surplus collection and a good bit of them don't have matching bolts, but I still like them, even the 30 some odd Turks that I have.

Could just be that it lost it's original hollowed bolt handle in a re-fit or someone pinched it to fake another jungle in the past.

Is your sight graduated to 800?
Is there a scalloping cut on the left side of the receiver to match the one you show us on the right?

I figure yours is A-OK and the bolt handle can always be drilled.

Todd.

All the relief cuts are there and the sight only goes to 800. I'll have to pull the bolt and look for serial numbers.

I wouldn't get too torqued about it if merely the bolt handle is off as there's a background of that happening.

You don't need to remove the bolt to read the number. It'll be electro-pencilled on the backside of the handle. Probably quite lightly so look closely.

Also, for my money, you're way ahead in the deal for a Chi-Com SKS.

Todd.

True, but it was cool to have an all original Enfield from '47.

The bayonets these things use are brutal.

If your bolt was replaced during an arsenal re-build, it does not alter the value one bit. But if that is the case, the serial number of the receiver should be electro-penciled, or otherwise marked on the bolt handle. If there is no number, or a different number on the bolt, it was probably replaced by a previous owner.

If that is the case, you STILL got a good deal! Enjoy that carbine!

This is what my '47 Fazakerly looked like from the pawn shop, for $150. I honestly think they didn't know what it was. I didn't either, thought it was a Bubba job, until I did some research and then hurried back for it.

How it looks now. (yes, I've turned the sling around the right way since this photo) Oh, if anyone has a bayonet for one of these for sale, I'm needing one. Even a repop would do.

Bayonet?

Yup, a fella just HAS to have a bayonet if he has a righteous "Jungle".

Got a case of "headin' for the hills" ammo left too.

This, my 1903A3 and FR-8 are the big bore, grab-'em guns.

Wow what a beauty. How long ago did you get that? What would that one be worth now.

Not sure, 5-6 years maybe. No idea what they're worth. Mine's been d&t'd for the scope mount, and I degreased/re-oiled the wood.

:scrutiny: And after that you can order up some fake inspector stamps so that you can "improve/enhance" some other milsurps prior to sale ...
I don't see that being the same at all. The bolt handle is a stand out issue when looking at these.

Like building one's own properly curved bolt handle to correct lost/replaced 1903A4 handle.

Our man's rifle's right, why not drill the bolt.

Todd.

I wasn't thinking about drilling, it will never be numbers matching. There are however, a few sites out there for parts that all have the same prices.

I may drop the $50 on a bayonet. If so, I'll pick up a correct no5 bolt.

Don't forget that Enfields control head space with the removable front part of the bolt. If you put in a new one, it could be out of spec so you will need to check your headspace.

I couldn't just buy a stripped bolt and swap everything over?

Probably - but there MIGHT be differences in the locking lug dimensions and could POSSIBLY be a problem. Better to be safe than sorry. I have seen headspace tested using shim stock, so you could google it up & see what you are getting into.

There were bolt head sizes from 0 to 4. I have only seen 0, 1 & 2's for sale. I have never seen a 3 or a 4. The problem gets better (worse) as a 1 is thicker than a 0, & a 2 is thicker than a 0 or 1, but when measured they are all over the place. If the headspace is correct I would leave it alone.

Back in Summer'04 when importation waves allowed places like AIM and Centerfire to offer Nº4s for $80-$100/ea I noticed something regarding the boltheads.

Even though these rifles were coming to us "direct from arsenal storage", a lot of them exhibited bad headspace ... and those invariably sported #0 or #1 boltheads.

I realized that what had probably happened was that somewhere along the distribution track some slimy *$@$#*^ was replacing any relatively rare and, therefore, MUCH-more-valuable #3 (especially) boltheads with the readily available, cheap #0 and #1 boltheads.

I was lucky because I had a small supply of #2s & #3s in my kit, enough for my needs, but this bolthead swapping left a lot of folks with veritable wallhangers scrambling to find and pay exhorbitant prices for #3 boltheads.

IIRC, #3s during that time, if you could find them, were commanding prices of $35+ ... which was 35%-50% of the price of the rifles.

If the headspace is correct I would leave it alone.
Ab-so-lute-ly. :)

How about the somewhat subtle difference between the #4 and Enfield #5 regarding outline around the mag well? I have three #4/mk. 1
and two "Jungle" #5s.

Did anybody else compare these?

The trigger guard for the No5 ,if I remember right is a little lighter.
I would have to pull out a few No4s to compare the trigger guards to my No5.
