snub

I'm the revolver guy who doesn't like "snubs." At least not the small J-frame size ones. I had a couple of K-frames that I liked OK, but they are still bigger and heavier than I want to carry day to day. Personally I carry a Ruger LC9s. It's light, holds more rounds than revolver, is easier to reload and most importantly I shoot it a LOT better than I ever did ANY snub revolver. It took me a long time to admit that to myself. I'm a "revolver guy." I'm supposed to like revolvers. Others will tell you the exact opposite of what I just said. It's not a problem, just different likes.

Having said that, I have OWNED a lot of small snubs. I just don't anymore. I've owned Colts, Smith & Wesson's, Taurus, and Charters (both new and old). Most in 38 Special, but a couple of 44 Specials were thrown in just for luck.

Other than the fact that I didn't care much for shooting them, because I couldn't shoot them worth a flip, I liked all of them. They're great little guns and obviously work well for others. I don't think you'd go wrong with any of them.

I used to carry a S&W model 60 until I bought a Glock 26. 10 rounds without a reload and a 17 round G17 magazine for when I really get messed up. Hopefully neither will ever be needed.

  1. I'm often a snub carrier as well, mostly S&W's but not exclusively J & K frames, in .38, .357 mag. .45, and .45 colt. I don't like the K frames for pocket carry but the extra weight makes them seem like they recoil less while a light weight J frame in a pocket holster is a very easy thing to carry all day but snap more when shot.

Yes.
A 640 no dash with Pachmayers.

Pros-fast and accurate
-perfect for pocket carry
Cons-easy to loose fixed stainless sights in bright light (judicious use of finger nail polish helps)
-ejected brass tends to hang, slowing reloading (keep chamber clean and depress the rod with gusto)
-1-7/8" barrel doesn't generate enough steam to reliable expand heavy hollow points and +P in little guns ain't fer whimps, so I rely on 158 grain LSWC)
-130 grain .38 Spl.s are just plain wrong:fire:

I have snubs in 38, 357 and 44 special, like them and use to carry them often but now rarely.
Hadn't thought about it before but I guess the main reason is that I have better holsters for some of my semi autos.
I don't like speed loaders on my belt or strips in my pocket either.

I stated in my first post in this thread that a 38 Snubby is my EDC piece. Actually, that's not quite true - it's my EDC piece everyday except Sunday. A little 9mm semi-auto is slimmer and hides easier in my "Sunday" clothes.:)

I laugh when people say a snub nosed revolver isn't accurate beyond 10 or 12 feet. A friend and I regularly shoot our S&W J frames out to 40 yards and will hit 4 out of 5 times or better on an 11" X 13" steel plate at that range. The revolvers are accurate. It's the shooter that isn't.

For a good part of 35 years, I've carried one or more .38 Snubs from Charter Arms. Have owned Colts, S&W's, H&R's Iver J's, Taurus, Rossi and EIG. In every caliber from .22 up thru 44. all shot well and were a definite comfort while patrolling alone the streets of several small towns.

Once while responding to an armed robbery in progress alarm, my duty sidearm was in the lock box - had been booking another prisoner. Drew the back u and continued on to the call. False alarm, but much better than a ooops

Been there twice, sort of. On one occasion, my backup officer was the one who showed up without his sidearm, for the same reason you did. I gave him mine (knowing he'd be able to shoot it) and pulled my Undercover to check the building, a source of near-nightly false burglar alarms.

In the other, it was I that was booking a prisoner when a report of yelling and then "shots fired" came in from the apartment complex across the street from the PD. I threw my guy back in the cage and ran outside, intending to just run to the scene on foot as other cars were responding. I realized quickly I didn't grab my sidearm, so I stopped as I passed my cruiser and retrieved the Mossberg 500 from it.. the call ended up being an old codger yelling at some kids that were "cutting through" and then trying to scare them off by popping a couple of .22 caliber rounds off from a little Beretta. Yeah, he went to jail.
