so anyone gonna be using a 30-30 this year?

Maybe. For 20 years I've used the same 7mm mag. It needs some work this year and won't be available to hunt. However...I bought a Marlin 336 LTS about a year ago and I've never shot it. My original plan was to sell it...but when I picked it up it felt like I'd just pulled Excalibur from it's rock. I couldn't believe how good that little rifle felt.

I might put it to use this year.

Me and my Marlin 336 will be hitting the woods. It is perfect for deer hunting east of the Mississippi. Plus the 30-30 round is responsible for killing the more deer in the United States than any other hunting round.

I wouldn't use something that old and primitive. I use strictly a modern cartridge, 250 Savage, that was introduced in 1915.

Never had a 30 30, but, have never heard of one not doing the job. Any failure has been on the operator end. It is amazing how the deer is just as dead and tastes just as good as onemshot with latest and greatest.

I'm from Pennsylvania. My Marlin 336 is my go to woods gun for Whitetail. Yes it is a 30-30.

I bought a Marlin 336 in 30-30 at the Navy store before my discharge in 1964.Missed my first shot at a buck due to "the fever".I put a cheap Bushnell 3 to 8 scope on it and took my first 16 deer with it.

My 336 in 30-30 and in 35 are out of the safe now and I will be confirming the zero.

The Swede as well as a 30-06 and a 243 will also be confirmed today in preparation for deer season. I prefer a bolt gun for inexperienced hunters to use because my 336's are old and don't have the safety.
Opening morning will probably be the Swede. The 30-30 is more of a late season gun for me as I tend to move back into the creek bottoms where a 100 yard shot would be nearly impossible. Not that it won't reach out much farther but I like to keep shots up close.

Maybe. I have a rossie rio grande. Thru a 1950s fixed 4 power Weaver on it and plan too give it too my son in a few yrs.im probably going to use my 250 savage but may take the 30.30.

I'm a bolt guy but this rossi really feels good

Took my 336 30-30 out this evening for a deer hunt. I put a little leupold 2-7 scope on it a couple weeks ago when I decided I would take it after the bucks instead of the heavy and long 300 WM that I had carried up and down the mountains for 2nd elk season.

I had a little mulie buck in the crosshairs right before dark, but I let him go, he was pretty skinny.

Western Field 742 (aka Marlin 336) made in 1967. Taken quite a few deer with this one over the years, more than all my other guns combined. And that is here in Montana with more open country hunting.

I also own a Winchester Centennial 66 but it's not a hunting rifle, more of a family heirloom.

That has more to do with pure numbers of guns in the woods than anything else. The 30-30 rifle and its ammo have been "best sellers" for over a century. (And for obvious reasons.)

Law of averages says that if you put a 1000 30-30 rifles in the woods, compares to 100 or so each of 10 other calibers, more deer are going down to the 30-30.

But like I said, there is a reason for that lopsided preference among hunter-especially in the eastern woodlands.

Nice mount by the way. I especially like displaying the rifle with the trophy.

I've used 30-30s the past few years, and have never had to track. Granted my shots were within 50 yards, but two deer dropped exactly where they were shot.
This year, I'll be using the .35 Remington, just to mix it up some, but I may take my Savage 99 out for deer #2.

I've heard that Indiana only allows straight walled cartridges is this true? if so that would be pistol cartridge carbines, there officers wife!

No way.

Magpul doesn't make any accessories for the 30-30.

Went up to north central MT couple weeks ago on my annual muley hunt. Took my 270 as usual but also brought my 336 30-30 I bought a while back, last of the pre-Remlins. Like it a lot. Hunted one day with it, didn't see anything worth shooting. Been loading the Leverevolution boolits and it groups decent at 200 so I was fine with what the rifle would do if needed. I'll get a deer with it.

Took a whitetail a few years ago with my late 70's Texan. Great caliber and lovely to shoot.

I don't hunt much but I love shooting my 1952 Winchester '94 in .30-30 Rescued her from a pawn shop in Kingman, Az for $400.00 a couple of years ago. I reload but I wish the brass itself wasn't so expensive.

You can shoot them all day, and they just keep running.

And remember that guy with the 30-30 from the first season of Homeland?
He got pwned by that guy in the woods with the sniper rifle.
I'm going to be honest. I love blue steel and walnut. But. If Magpul made a MOE forend for my old 336 i'd buy one. They'd need to keep it slender.

Hatt, that's an interesting concept. Still trying to wrap my mind around it, but interesting none the less.

Can you explain just a bit about why that forend would be appealing on a .30-30? I'm not experienced with EBR's, so don't have direct experience with them (other than shooting one once).

Not arguing against it at all, either -- what ever floats people's boats. Just curious. I like evolution.

Probably #1 reason is that the forend was mucked up with sandpaper by some previous owner.:( Other than that it would give a lot more options for sling mounts, flashlights, and other accessories.

well I couldn't get the pic to post on the hunting section says its too big heck I don't know how to shrink it to fit! but the 30-30 spoke this morning a got a nice young buck about 75lbs dressed. wohoo! :)

Apparently .30-30 is good for dinosaurs check this out from the movie "Jurassic World".

I think lever actions are becoming "cool" again...

Definitely getting cool again.

But I propose that one ^ may be a larger caliber than .30-30. .44 maybe, or .45-70? I'm not sure I'd want to try .30-30 on a big one.

ETA: here's that lever from the front. I can't quite judge the caliber.
