so anyone gonna be using a 30-30 this year?

Yup, I've got a win 94ae, this was the very first rifle I bought as soon as I was old enough to buy guns myself. Got it in 1989 at KMart, I remember it well had to put it on layaway couldn't put the $200 it cost together all at once.

Other than black powder, it's the only rifle I use for deer. I've been using a Winchester 94 top eject for the last 30 years but this year I went in with a 1974 Marlin 336 with a DNZ one piece scope mount and Leupold 1.5-5 x 20 scope on it. Eyes finally got too bad for the iron sights on my '94.

Love the 30-30

I checked with my shipper this afternoon. My 336 shipped out this afternoon for Florida.
It'll get there after I do, because it's going ground, and I'm flying.
But it's on the way away from here, and that's what counts.

Southeast coast ...

I will be for my Texas hog hunt in January. Win. 94 and a Savage 340 (if I ever get the scope sorted out...) If I get a chance I'll post an interesting pic that proves the adage that some guns love some ammo and vice versa. This particular gun (the 94) will shoot a 3 to 4" group at 50 yds with Federal 150gr. and less than an inch (open factory iron sights) with Winchester 170gr.

if i were to hunt id just bring an AKM in 7.62x39.. probably with an underfolding stock and a red dot sight

liberty1776 I use 170gr bullets ever since I killed my first deer and I use 33.6gr win, 760 powder and this load works perfect! this has been the best shooting killing load I've ever seen! :)

I've got a marlin 336 that belongs to my grandfather that I've killed hogs with but never a deer. Hoping to change that this year!

My Dad presented me an AE model 20 years ago. Since then, I've downed 11 deer with it. Oh yes, this carbine is going hunting with me this year!

My daughter toppled this heavy bodied muley in western South Dakota using my carbine. One shot through the chest at approx. 125 yards did the job nicely.

30-30

I just mounted up a Weaver K4 Classic 4x38 mm scope on my Springfield 840 bolt action 30-30.I also have a Marlin 30AS 30-30 with a 3x9 scope.I don't hunt with them myself but my nephews do . Great accurate rifles . hdbiker

I have an 80's vintage Glenfield -- the 336 that Marlin made for Pennys or Western Auto or somebody. It's been born again. The bluing is in great shape, but I ditched the yellow birch stock for a gray laminate, added a big loop lever and topped the old gal off with a 2-7 Nikon. Drops white tails in their tracks at the distance that my shots present themselves -- about 75 yards.

In my younger days the lever action and pump action rifles were more popular/prevalent. It seems that over the decades those rifles have to an extent ben displaced by the bolt action with a scope.

The best lever action in my opinion is and was the Savage 99 with a tang safety, rotary-spool magazine in 300 Savage with a Redfield receiver sight. Gone but not forgotten!

That's not to diminish the Winchester M94 in 30-30 but on the other hand I thought the Marlin was the better rifle in 30-30 or 35-Remington. Some may or may not recall the older Remington pump action rifles with the tubular in 30 Remington.

I own three 30-30 rifles two Winchesters, and one marlin and I need to break the marlin 336w in, but would like to play with the new marlin 336bl sure looks nice :)

Actually, I got a couple .30-30s, both a Winchester 94 and a Marlin 336. I just don't really ever use them since they are lacking in range out here in the open country. Fun to shoot but just not a good choice for my terrain.

My dad gave me a Win '94 in '66 so its hard to leave it home when deer season rolls in! Hard to beat a hunt with a gun that has good memories attached.

I like the Winnie 94 in 30-30 so much I got another one from a pawn shop just to keep in the truck as a truck gun. Its the much maligned version with chrome plated receiver and a speckling of rust pre-installed. It must have been somebody else's truck gun before me. I wanted a carbine length in a real rifle caliber, and this venerable war horse just filled the bill.

I think the Model 94 (in whatever caliber) is especially well suited to that use. Mine is a pre-64, but someone reblued it, which killed the collector value, so I carry it around on the 4 wheelers all summer, and in the canoe in the fall. A quality rifle that is not a family heirloom.

Savage 170 30-30 Win

My 18 yr old Son has an old Savage Model 170 pump rifle with a Tasco World Class 3-9 x 40 that will print 1-1/2" all day long with Speer 130 Spitzers @ 2500 fps. That's his Blacktail rifle.
