OK, a bit long winded, but it makes for a better story LOL........
I got a 10/22 a while back, clean, and wanted a half inch or better shooter at 50 yards.
The donor rig was IIRC '95 (birch mannlicher). I sold the scope and stock off it, and bought a GM heavy taper 19". Figured the gap would not be bad w a .920" bbl clearance stock, so gave the Victor Titan a go. Volq hammer and it did .5" or better at 50 yards w 12X Leupold (SK match).
The vertical grip which seems all the rage now, I just couldn't warm up to. Bench it was fine, but for a hunting gun......it just kinda irked me. Plus, I shoot my pineys offhand, and didn't need a 4-12X AO Leupold on it. That scope was on my 700 .243 win, but with no chucks around, I put a 3-9X on it for yotes. The 4-12X was older friction knob and I sold it for almost twice what I paid.
Good enough.
So I put the 10/22 up for sale at LGS........where it sat a couple months.
Took it home recently and thought maybe drop it in synth sporter stock, Fajen made one, EABCO sold them a while back.............all gone, none used............and I hate laminates.Been looking a while, still no luck.
I did pick up a CZ455 for a light gun and kinda like it. Haven't put 50 rounds through it yet.
So here I am w this 10/22 build. Figured w the gunshow today, usually not very good (waste of 5 bucks) I'd go in and look for a Contender barrel (PCR rifle has killed the specialty pistol deer market here- plus season was over).
Walk in and there sits a dinged/worn 10/22 sporter.
So I decided the day before, to not own any 10/22...........take my build gun as trading stock...........and now end up with two 10/22's. Got a small chip up top and some dings, nothing major except for the chip. I could epoxy it...........but it's small enough I aint doing anything to the stock.
Run it as is.
Action was not too dirty................think the poor thing sat most of its life. Top has marks, like many do from scope base/rings. I could pop it apart and Gunkote it. But w scope base it doesn't show, was more concerned about stripped screw holes (I have the Brownells kit to address that if need be). They were fine.
So............tomorrow a trigger job and bbl clean.
Of course I need an old Leupold 4X for this, and my M8 went bye bye on my #1 RSI.
Evidently I slept under a rock as prices on older Leupold have jumped considerably..........I think due to the new models and their angular turret bodies..........the Freedom stuff.
3 yrs ago I paid 129 shipped for a clean old 4X M8. Paid 175 for a spotless 4X compact that was being sold incorrectly as an EER (so no bids.....yay me). That was 2 months ago.
Same stuff is 50 bucks higher (or more) now.
Anyway, I did not want another .22 rifle, let alone another 10/22. But the sporters are neat, and my dad has a minty .44 mag sporter.
