Grendel here is bolt-action, CZ 527. I assume you're having trouble with the reloads cycling an AR action. I couldn't be of specific help on that but you could try the 6.5 Grendel Forum. If you're just looking for good loads, we shoot 90 grain Speer TNT because they're accurate and affordable. We'll hunt with 100 gr. Barnes TSX or TTSX. With the TNT's, 7 to 8 grains of Trailboss is a soft load. It's a heavier bullet than a .22 but there's still similarly no unpleasant recoil. H335 loads go up to 31.7 grains. I've got one boy doing well shooting 30.5 grains. I've read and do believe IMR 8208 XBR is the fool-proof powder for Grendel. It's very consistent across temperatures and it's been reported to have a fairly wide window of charge weights with low SD. Reloader 15 is more old-school but hard to go wrong with.

Back on topic, it sounds like you have a good thing going with your boy. He's still young and he'll grow into your other guns and then you won't be able to make him go back to being little again. You'll just have to wait for grand kids. So enjoy it while you can.

Hi...
Interesting that the noise and recoil of a .223 bothered a 9 year old.
I started my son with handguns when he was 8 years old...started with rimfires and worked up through full power .357Magnum rounds that summer in a S&W 686 Silhouette Model revolver.
My son was shooting big bore handguns at 9 years old and I could barely keep him supplied with cartridges.
He was a pretty good sized kid at the time and is now(at 25 years old) about 6'4" and about 250lbs.
Recoil still doesn't bother him.

Never bothered my oldest daughter when she started shooting back in the early '80s at about 9 or 10 years old, either.

Everyone is different.

Only trouble I've had with cycling was been when I used IMR 4198 powder. I've also tried H335, IMR 8208, and CFE 223 and all 3 have cycled no problem. My issue is accuracy. The rifle is a semi-auto AR-15 with 20inch heavy barrel, 1:8.5 twist rate. With factory 123gr Hornady ammo it shoots VERY well, like .5 MOA. I've been trying to duplicate that by buying Hornady brass and Hornady bullets, and I'm able to duplicate the velocity, but nothing I've tried has come close in the accuracy department. My reloads are all shooting about 1 to 1.5 MOA. Which ordinarily I wouldn't complain about 1MOA but I know that the rifle is capable of more than that. I'd just shoot factory all the time and not worry about it but it's not always in stock and it's kind of expensive (usually more than $1 per round).

Update: added limbsaver recoil pad, dyed gun blue. Kid shot about 45 rounds this time before stopping. Problem solved. New problem: keeping him supplied with enough ammo LOL
