If the carbon builds up more on one side of the front sight, it can move zero out of the X ring at 50 yards. And maybe a little low.
I got a one pound can at the local army surplus store, it should last about 30 years. I use an old pellet tin to store some in my shooting box, a wrap of electrical tape keep sit sealed and moisture free. If you clean your sights occasionally, the build up does not effect your shooting.
