This is my first and only Mauser, I don't know much about them.

The bolt has a Buehler safety which clears the scope, but is only a two-position; either fire position or bolt (and sear?) locked, no center position. My disassembly/ assembly book tells me to go to the center spot before removing the bolt, obviously that ain't gonna happen. How to get the bolt apart?

This is a large ring, the front ring is about 1-5/8" overall (length) and the front~~1/2" is stepped down a little, a few thousandths, and has a circled swastika with an eagle over it, "Mod.98" on the left side of the action. To me that says it was German manufacture, original(?) stepped military barrel but stamped "8x63mm" so 8mm/06. I just wondered if it was something that shouldn't have been messed with, given the marking (eagle/swastika). Price was right, I thought, and included RCBS 8mm/06 dies and about 300 FA Match brass (opened to 8mm).

I have a couple of rechambered Arisakas that I've enjoyed working with, as I said this is the first Mauser for me.

TIA for any info or suggestions.

Hook the cocking peice on the edge of a bench or something and unscrew it.

Also, look for a small hole in the cocking peice you could stick a nail in to hold it cocked.

A few good smiths drilled then so they were easier to take apart.

I usually hook the cocking piece over a ledge, or, better yet, grab it in vise jaws and pull it back until I can slip a penny between the shroud and the cocking piece. After that, you can unscrew the shroud in the same manner that you would with a three position safety.

I use the vise jaw system; it avoids chewing up the edge of the workbench.
