I saw a 3 inch S&W 625 in a shop yesterday for $550. I neglected to catch the dash number (sorry). It appears to be unfired outside the factory. It has the frame mounted firing pin and no manual lock. It has a bead blasted finish. It is not a Performance Center gun. It is probably and RSR or Lew Horton’s? So, is this a rare variant worth the money or a run of the mill 3 inch 625 (if there is such a thing)?

Thanks.

Frame mounted pin?

In 1998, they did a run of 200 three-inchers in .45 Colt. If you want one, it may be a while before you bump into another one...

I assumed the one I saw was in .45 ACP. I'll give the shop a call when they open to get more information. I noticed the 625 on my way out the door and did not "study" it. More info to follow ...

Ok ... it is a 625-6 in .45 ACP. Product code 148122 and special order code 8294.

Oh, and it is sporting a nice smooth fingergroove wood grip (that, unfortunately does not fit my hand very well).

Does this help?

Well, now, that's an interesting piece. It ain't even listed in the Standard Catalogue... Product code 148121 is the 3" 625-7 in .45 Colt, and according to the book, they didn't go to the frame-mounted pin until the "-7" guns. Then again, 625's are weird anyway, since they skipped the 625 and 625-1 and started with a "-2".

$550? I'd buy it, but I'm a sucker for 3" N-frames... :uhoh:

625-3

I have a 3" 625-3 in .45ACP the $550 doesn't sound like a bad price i would go ahead and buy it but like someone has said short barrel N frames make me smile

I also have a 3" 625-3 marked 45 Cal Model of 1989. Can't beat those 3" N frames. I'd take a look at the auction sites to see what they are going for but $550, although not great, is a fair price. Now if I could only find a 3" 657 without having to take out a 2nd morgatge.

Does it look something like this?

I almost bought this one a while back, but the seller wanted too much for it. I think $550 sounds pretty reasonable.

Had a 625 .45ACP with 5" (sold it), had a 625 .45ACP Mountain Gun (just recently sold it), but if I ran across one of these 3 inchers in a local store at that price I'd probably buy it.--Leigh

Ok, here's the update ...

I called S&W and they said it was a Lew Horton run of 150 from 1989. This did not make sense to me as it has the frame mounted firing pin. So ...

I called back and got someone different on the line. Turns out that there was a run in 1989 AND there was a run of 155 of them in 1998. Both runs have the same product code. So ...

The 625 I was looking at is from 1998. I talked to the shop owner and he will sell it for $500 out the door (PA tax, etc. included - saves about $90 over the marked price of $550 plus tax, etc.). I have decided to go ahead and get it. He is holding it for me.

Thanks for everyone's help on this!!

Guys,

What would a revolver like this be used for? (I'm kinda tryin' to figure out a reason to get one from somebody, too...)

Like those grips.

Also, the one I saw had a frame-mounted firing pin. Are these as durable and reliable as the hammer-mounted firing pins?

Thanks,
Steve

"What would a revolver like this be used for? "

Shooting. Sorry, I can't think of a better answer. Most states won't allow deer hunting with a barrel under 5", or with .45acp. Other than that, it could be used for just about anything.

As much as we all seem to collectively like/oogle/drool over 3" round butt N-frames, why doesn't S&W make more of them - even a regular production item?

Do we need to start a lobbying campaign, similar to what Wiley Clapp did to get the Centennial back into production?

How I would love to have a 3" 29......

I'm trying to figure out why I should get the one I know about. It has the frame-mounted firing pin, which I don't want and it has rubber grips, which I don't want, but...

SteveW13,
If you decide against getting the 3" M625, how about passing out the info so others can take a crack at it?
