Some people say the knees go first. Others, the eyes. Others worry about the memory. I'll be 70 on the 25th.

A few years ago, i was having some problems with inoperable spinal stenosis. To get up out of chairs, I needed a cane. Checking around on THR led me to look for a blackthorn walking stick. I ordered one, and I love it.

It not only helped with mobility, it also caused worrisome people coming the other way to give me wide berth. I love that, too.

But sometimes it was in the other room. Some recent knee problems motivated me to want another, so I bought another. The shaft of this one is smooth. It is allegedly the same stick that has been presented to Ronald Reagan, Tip O'Neill, and several other luminaries. I like it.

For those who do not know this, the blackthorn is a flowering shrub, related to the hawthorn, that grows in dense thickets that are impenetrable by livestock. The individual sticks have long, sharp, spiky thorns, and are taken from shrubs that re-grow new branches--a very sustainable process indeed. The handle of a blackthorn shillelagh, club, walking stick, or cane is shaped from the root. The thorns are removed.

St. Joseph's walking staff is said to have been made from the same hawthorn shrub that had been used to make a crown of thorns.

Aficionados of Wagnerian opera (??) may recall that part of the story line of Tannhauser, which was based loosely on Norse mythology, has to do with a sinner who traveled to Rome to see the Pope, and who was told that absolution was as impossible as the idea that the Pope's walking stick would flower--which it did, after it had been thrust into the ground.

Some shillelaghs are made from blackthorn, and others, from oak.

Now where did I leave that darn stick? Having couple more can't hurt.

I decided to order another. I went online and ordered one. But memory had failed me. I had forgotten having seen a synthetic stick sold by Cold Steel Knives a few years ago. At the time, the idea of a synthetic one did not really appeal to me. But it turns out that what I just ordered is a synthetic one. The thing is supposed to arrive tomorrow.

They do look very real indeed. Not only that, they are supposed to be tough. There is a video of a man breaking a block of ice with one, chinning himself on one placed over a pipe, and jumping up and down on one placed on two cinder blocks.

I decided I wanted another real blackthorn, so I ordered one. Came today, and it is my favorite.

Before I ordered the molded one, I saw a heavy duty natural ash cane online, and I ordered it. It is supposed to be delivered tomorrow

I should think that should be enough.

Now, lest here be any doubt, these are mobility aids.

But I do very much like the idea that having one with me may obviate the need for unholstering anything else.

I have one of the Cold Steel blackthorns. I found it to be too heavy as a cane, because of its thickness. Also the large knobhead isn't comfortable for carrying this heavy cane on long walks. It's in the garage now and I am using a natural blackthorn with a derby handle that I got to replace it.

I like the work of Brazos Walking Sticks: http://www.brazos-walking-sticks.com/index.php

I have one of their colorwood derby canes and a colorwood staff. Plan to get some more of their canes, have been eyeing the Twisted Cocobolo cane. The Twisted Zebrawood is also a possibility.

I'd keep the nice cane for walks and just go with a hickory stock cane in every room for around the house because of they are so inexpensive (assuming you have a farm supply around to pick through, but then I don't have a nice blackthorn so wadda I know.) ;)

a "few" around the house etc.

I had both knees replaced a few years back [ 2007 & 2011 ] and I was using a cane for 'support' in a mental sort of way.

I found that I like to collect them, more than I actually use [ or need ] them.

I have a 'pig cane' that is cheap and VERY strong, used by pig farmers to move the stubborn LARGE critters around [ got that at Lehman bros in Oh. ].

I also have many others that are light and FAST.

I also bought a C/S model = WAY too heavy ,thick & slow.

At least one in truck,3 in garage and a couple in house.

I practice stick on the heavy bag still,so I really like a 'walking aid'.

I also bought a "Strongest Umbrella" ,and that is a hoot and its good for SO many uses and will not be taken when in a "unarmed / weapons free" zone.

The blackthorn stick that arrived yesterday came from lollysmith.com. You see the actual stick you will receive. I like a rather thick one.

The one I bought in July came from the Blarney Loft via Amazon. Since the shaft had been turned, I could have it shortened locally. My best length is about 35.5 in.

The ash cane that came today is a 1 in. dia. cane from Royal Canes that came from Fashionable Canes. I had it cut to length when I ordered it.

I cannot find anything on the blackthorn I have been using for the past few years.

The Cold Steel stick arrived today. As a couple of people have said, it is heavy. This is embarrassing, but I had been reading the description, and I stopped befe I got to the part where they explained it was synthetic. Doggone.

Real blackthorns really look meet, but a traditional cane handle works for me better with my tendonitis and arthritis. I once heard Massad Ayoob mention that he lies the traditional handle for defense.

Thanks for the link, hso.

@ westkentucky

Why not bring my 'umbrella' to anyplace or event ?.

I was an LEO and I know most are NOT trained enough to have a clue as to what this really is.

And its NOT a weapon, its an umbrella and I am an old man !.

Besides I carry a cane as a preferred 'tool' as its easier to do the stick tricks I train at.

Best bang for the buck is STILL the e-NASCO "elephant" stock cane. $13 + S&H 1-1/8 in. diam. octagonal oak, crook handle cane http://www.enasco.com/product/C07434N

Great for support, use a chair tip from the hardware store. Will never be questioned by TSA, or stadium security. and ... as they said for the old "Timex" Watch commercials - "takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'"

I'm going to get one of these next time.

Cane Handles

The cognoscenti say that the hook ("crook") handle is the most effective for self defense, and the reason is obvious. One can use the hook to pull on an arm, or neck.

I started out with a real blackthorn with a knob fashioned from from the root, which has some clear tactical disadvantages. The choice was based on style and was "rooted" in ignorance. I just didn't like the looks of crook handles. Perhaps if my 84 year old grandfather and his cornices had not used them during my early years, I wouldn't feel that way.

I now have two of them, not including one that has had the shaft turned smooth. I have noticed that they are not only attention getters, they seem to have a deterrent effect on some people. They just look "effective".

My heavy duty ash cane from Royal Canes has a derby handle. I seem to recall watching a video of Massad Ayoob demonstrating the use of a cane with a derby handle to ward off ruffians.

A knee problem now has me using a cane all the time. I find the derby handle fine for mobility. I suppose that if I really expected to use it for "serious business", I should use a cane with a crook handle, but I'm not there yet on that question.

Kleanbore next month I'll be three years older than you and have found out as we get older three things go, the 1st being the mind and I forget what the other two are.!

That said I've been thinking of a cane thanks for the eNasco link.

Why not bring my 'umbrella' to anyplace or event ?.

Many arenas/stadiums that will allow a cane will not allow an umbrella, and it has nothing to do with looking like a weapon. Umbrella use blocks the view of other fans so they are not permitted at many sporting events.

Yep, if you haul an umbrella to a NASCAR event, or any other outdoor sporting event where the crowd can be rowdy, you'll be told to put it back to prevent an altercation. Tell them that you need it for a cane and they still might tell you to that the place was posted against umbrellas and you need to go back to your vehicle and get a cane instead.

@ Waterhouse & HSO

Loud and clear as to the reason for not taking it to sporting events --- but I don't like crowds and so avoid that type of venue for a few years now [ decades, almost ].

I have even avoided Yankee stadium for a few years ,and now will do so all the more as my 'EDC' is a problem there.

They have just now started to scan all those entering,as a retired LEO it was normal for me to bring my 2 guns AND spare ammo [blades too ] to the venue and NEVER be searched.

I have a 'few' canes that I practice with ,and 2 replaced knees that give me a good excuse to carry [ if not use ] a stick.

My wife has stenosis and uses a cane, she keeps one in each car and every room in the house, I made up a Bear Claw cane for her from a $5 flea market hatchet.
