Stealthy AR?

Riding the charging handle is not "the best" way to load an AR. It is meant to use the inertia from the BCG and spring to load the chamber. However I have used it to great success when the situation called for it. Most of my hunting is from a ground blind so climbing a tree is not normal for me. I usually load at the truck but since I was hunting with a partner last week I decided to wait. Made lass noise than when I sat down. The turkeys didn't mind but they weren't the target species anyway.

Why are you guys pulling rifles up trees? I have been hunting my whole life, and have only ever slung the rifle and climbed the tree...

As far as being quiet, do you think pulling the receiver pin and removing the bolt to directly load the first round could be quieter?

I guess the deer out there climb trees.
I've sat in a stand for 2 hours once, then I got bored so I headed home. 50 feet into my journey I ran across 2 does 25 yards away, so I shot them.

Because Steve, if you have a slung rifle when you climb trees the rifle has a tendency to slide off your shoulder. It is safer and easy to pull it up. There is a way. Cross slinging but that is awkward I don't know anyone that does it that way.

Well, I place the rifle on the sling muzzle down on my left shoulder, and climb right up. In 20-ish years I never had a moment's trouble.

i always load up when i leave the car. i know its bad practice but i sling the rifle across my back and go up my tree with my climber. i tie my backpack and pull that up afterwards. i unload and tie my rifle when i get down.

Stealth AR pull the charging handle and let it forward slowly, click the forward assist until the carrier is home, if you don't do it before you are actually hunting.

More than likely you ran them all off getting into the stand, they were not there anyway or it didn't matter to them.

I see, I take it the buttis on your left side and the muzzle on your right so the sling goes from your left shoulder to your right hip?

No the butt is on my left side and the muzzle is also on the left side, facing down. Again, I've never even had a moment of feeling like my rifle would slip.

Not everybody uses slings. Sometimes, you have other gear to carry up. Depending on how your stand is hidden (we use burlap on some, camo netting on others), the means of concealment can easily become entangled with a slung gun.

I NEVER walk to my hunting spot with an unloaded firearm (or bow). I don't do much treestand hunting any more and have never done it with an AR but if I did, I would load and chamber the rifle before entering the woods and unload it when I get home. I have no problem hauling a loaded rifle up with a hoist rope. Of all the risky things we do in a day, I'm sure it's pretty low on the list.
