About two months ago my next door neighbor moved out and has his house up for sale. Last night around 10:30 pm i was sitting on my front porch smoking a cigarette before going to bed. My house is situated between lights posts and i had my porch light off. I was sitting there in the shadows and I assume that i am difficult to see. Anyway, as i was sitting there, i watched as a couple walked down the street. I assumed they lived in the neighborhood. I watched as they walked up to my neighbor's empty house and peered through the front window. Then they walked through the yard between my house and my neighbor's house...i assume to peak at the back yard and the side windows. I did not think much about it at that time...and assumed they were just interested in seeing the house. I turned my head for a few seconds and then I looked back to see them steal my neighbor's "protected by brinks" home security sign.
I was appalled that someone from our neighborhood would do something like that.
It has bothered me all day because I did absolutely nothing about it. I did not want to confront them because who knows if he was armed or not (i know I was...but did not know if he was) nor did i think a brinks sign was worth the trouble. I did not call the cops again because i did not think it was worth the trouble and i really did not get a good look at faces.
I keep thinking that had the dogs gone ballistic like they normally do when someone comes close to the house (they were inside at the time) and alerted me to someone being in the yard i might have gone out there, pistol in hand, seeing them pear into the windows...and things could have gotten ugly real quick.
I assume I did the right thing but can't help but wonder about the possibilities of what could have happened. I am also just a little annoyed that someone does not have the common sense or courtesy to stay off of other people's property...and then to steal something as trivial as a sign just irks me.
