Do I need the "strobe" version?

I don't even know if I want the strobe version. Kind of cool. Awkward to activate and I'm not sure how useful it would be in a SD situation.

What is your experience and/or opinion?

First, I have been carrying Streamlight products for nearly 20 years and recommend them. Second, I have a strobe on duty light that is attached to my weapon. It works great to disorient someone.

I'm planning on using this between a handgun and long guns.

I'd like the TLR-1 HP eventually for the rifle, but for now, I think think the TLR-1 or TLR-1S will work for all three and especially well on the handgun.

Yes get the strobe ! If you ever have the occasion to use it during a gun fight , it makes you much more difficult to target and it hardly effects the view from your position ! I assume you are moving laterally as much as possible while shooting! Have a friend put the light of strobe and shine it at you from say 30-50 ft in the dark while he moves laterally . ! You will see ! Kevin

I played OPFOR against soldiers who had strobe-mounted lights once. My lessons learned were thus:

1) When I was playing the bad guy, it still gave me something to shoot at.

2) I know this is obvious, but it bears mentioning/repeating: The light still works 2 ways.

3) I personally, having it used "against" me, didn't find it to be that disorienting.

Due to those factors, for now I've chosen to just stick with non-strobing lights. More FoF or expert opinion could convince me to go the other way. If you think it'll make you more secure though, by all means go that route. I too prefer Streamlights and admire their quality. I have a TLR-1 with 2 tours on a carbine in Afghanistan that now resides on my night stand gun.

No matter what you choose, train with it, but especially the strobe. While I as the target wasn't noticeably affected by the wonderlight, there was a soldier using it for the first time from his end who did find it a little disorienting. Ensure that won't happen to you if the light would be for serious purposes.

I think the strobe effect would be best up close. That being said...I find the strobe activation a bit awkward. In an SD situation I don't want to have to think of anything extra or rely on fine motor skills.

I don't know where they stand now, but back when I bought mine there was some discrepancy in the literature that prompted an e-mail to Streamlight asking 'bout the light output of the strobe vs non-strobe version. I was told by Streamlight that the strobe version put out more light than the non-strobe version (if that matters to ya), but after receiving it, I can't tell any difference.

I then thought maybe he was talking 'bout the strobe mode putting out more light (I was talking 'bout the constant light when I asked), but I can't really see why it would be designed in such a way? I think he was just yanking my chain to get me to spend the extra money.

Don't know that I'd ever use it, but I do like the fact that it's pretty difficult to accidently activate.

BTW-I was going to get another Streamlight Super Tac X, but see they now have the Pro Tac HL, so I opted for that instead.
That is one more bright light - darn near as powerful as the Super Tac's spot beam, but with tons more peripheral light, and no apparent dark rings, circles, etc.

Another thought, the strobe effect may become more effective when used in conjunction with other strobing lights. swat teams and room clearing military units might find it useful.

its questionable usefulness when used in solo applications and its awkwardness to activate means i chose the standard model for my G19. when i consider the role i want my light to take in my homes defense, namely target id and surprise, and since i live alone and not with a seal team, i don't think the strobe model would have been the right choice.

and since i live alone and not with a seal team

You're assuming...I don't...live with a group of special operators?

Good info all, thinking of going for the basic TLR-1.

I like the strobe model for it's whiz bang factor, but I try to keep my tacticool in check.

Can get a TLR1 for $100 locally so think that's what I'm going with.

Purchase on hold. If/when I do get one though think I will go with the TLR1.

Questioning if need a light mounted on a weapon at all. If I "need" one I could use zip ties and tape to make due. (No its not ideal)

Big gun show comes to town soon and that gives me the date chance to check things out in person and hands on. That combined with good advice on THR is invaluable.

Watch your lane.

I like the plain old TLR1 I have no use for a strobe but I can see how it would be useful in some situations. I have a TLR2 as well with a more sturdy back on it for a rifle. It has a laser or had but it broke but I still like the TLR2 for it has a switch to off so I don't accidentally turn it on. That is the very reason I got rid of the pressure switch I don't want to trip it accidentally

The Streamlight TLR come with a mount built into the frame so no zip ties or tape needed

The TLR1 is a good buy for 100ish. I sell them for 99$ I think. Shipping would be a bit more more locals to DFW could do ftf w/o the delivery charge
