Suppressed lever guns?

Never seen one myself, but there's reason you couldn't get the barrel threaded, and put a supressor on a lever gun.

Sure, it is mechanically possible. Any firearm with a closed breech should be. (Not revolvers, despite what you see on old TV shows and films. :p) It would be much easier to use a half-length tubular or, even better, a box magazine (which also allows you to use pointed bullets), so there would be no interference between the suppressor and the end of the full length tubular mag. Since lever guns also have two-piece stocks and often a barrel band, it is difficult to say how or if the extra weight hung out front would affect accuracy.

what would be the best caliber? I though that for a suppressor to work at max efficieny, the bullet would have to be subsonic. A heavy .44, .357, or .38 or older western caliber?

Somewhere in my dads old gun books there is an article about the first commercial silencers. The picture is of (I think) Hiram Maxim shouldering a .22 leveraction. When they were available I've seen S&H Arms Ruger leveractions in .44mag with suppressor to be used with .44spl. As was stated any locked breach firearm can be suppressed. It is the type of cartridge that is important for suitability.

Cheers,

I have seen some very quiet .44 spl firearms. I bet a suppressed lever action in 44 mag/.44 spl would be pretty quiet and very cool.

Not all that uncommon back before the NFA of 1934 made silencers essentially illegal (along with full auto firearms, sawed off guns and the like...). Have seen Marlins, Winchesters and Remington pump guns - mostly rimfires and 25-20, 32-20 - with barrels threaded for a Maxim silencer.

I was at a gun show in Arizona years ago and saw a neat Winchester lever gun. It was chambered in .32-20 and had a 14" octagon barrel and had been threaded for a Maxim Silencer. The owner had a letter from Winchester stating that the rifle was a special order and had been shipped in that configuration in 1930. The letter had the info on who originally ordered it and listed the exact date it shipped. The guy that owned it said he had not been able to find an original Maxim Silencer to complete the set.

A 357 lever gun pushing 38spls is already quiet, add a can and your looking at Hollywood style quiet! I had a 357 lever for a while, just pushing lighter 38spl loads it had less sound than my 22. Had I had my 9mm can at the time it would have been awesome!

Just make sure the core is open enough to accept the round.
