I'd get a Lee Enfield, I've seen surplus ammo for it now so it will be quite cheap to feed. They are fantastic rifles and are FUN to shoot!

I don't think anyone did mention the K31, Mikee, so I'll have to suggest that one to the OP as the best milsurp deal going ;)

No one mentioned the Enfield Model of 1917, we used a lot of them in the WW1. You have three to choose from, Winchester, Remington, Eddystone. Shop around for prices but 500 would be doable for a decent shooter.

Don't forget the K31's older brothers, the Swiss 1911 rifle and the K1911 carbine. Fire the same ammo as the K31 but often the 1911 rifle is a bit more accurate for many shooters due to the longer barrel. The K11 and the K31 carbines are very similar with some alterations to the bolt for the later model. Picked up my K11 at a local pawn shop for two and a half bills with only a hairline crack in the handguard as a defect. My K31 got it from Checkpoint Charlie last year in superb shape with a fiddleback walnut stock for around three bills. Swiss 1911 long rifle is now on my list.
