Sword for HD?

Definately needs to be a short sword or a very long knife. I lived on my own when I was 18 and I had a large bowie knife before I could afford a gun for home Defense. You got to watch however, most swords even though they may be sharp are only good for display. Machette are cheap and are made for hard work cutting bush. A fencing eppe (short foil) would be perfect, butn there is a big difference between fighting and fencing swords. From my experence Fencing sword have more bend and can break. Some manufacturerd of sword make Fighting versions of swords.

For those of us unable to take fencing classes due to a lack of time and/or funds, could you guys recommend a DVD or something similar with basic, no-nonsense, realistic self defense sword training courses?

Nothing beats a couple hours of basic instruction at a fencing school or club. Even better, take a private lesson. Explain to the instructor what you want to be trained for and ask for some simple exercises you can do at home with a mirror and a target.

That said, you could try this video ;

For a home defense situation, you don't need anything fancy, keep it basic, hit early and often, and guard yourself.

I'm no expert on American law, but I doubt you would be able to just walk about with a sword within a scabbard on your belt/back.
Carrying it wrapped up in a bag or something having just bought it, sure. But I expect you would get a few funny looks.

As usual, that depends on where you are.

Chances are, the bluer or more urban your state is the more likely it is somebody thought of that and outlawed it. Interestingly, in the Corporate Oligarchy of Delaware (my old home state) an unconcealed sword was perfectly legal as it was unconcealed. State law for "deadly weapons" included wordage about concealing them (naughty) and using them on people (very naughty) but not carring them around in broad daylight. Which I routinely did, given the circumstance (not a six foot long katana or scottish claymore, of course, more of a machetelike implement).

I never got hassled for it. Of course, I also once got beat up by a cop for having a walking stick, which he swore he thought was a shotgun. Which carrying unconcealed is also legal.

So, your mileage will vary.

Insofar as using it in your home it's not a case of anything goes but certainly a case of more goes than out on the street. I can't picture a very long sword being good for much but thrusting (nothing like putting a big gash in your drywall before you even hit the guy) but somehow I'm imagining the excretion of bricks of a perp jimmies my door to find a lean, muscular, angry kung-fu looking dude with no shirt, a very nice katana, and a Surefire in his teeth.

Hello,

In the absence of firearms, I'd recommend you look to the Bowie Knife for a defensive weapon for the home. A Randal bowie would be my suggestion. Weight maneuverability in CQB makes it ideal, effectiveness of cutting strokes provide deep wound channels to promote quick bleed out,.

Another style of knife I'd suggest to consider would be the Kerambit.

Peace,
Talon:cool:

Mental Image

I have this mental image of a guy breaking into a house. On the otherside of the door is a big hairy guy with a sword and shield, dressed in leather underwear (for a better mental image watch Gladiator). The homeowner yells ROAR and bangs the sword on the shield, then yells ROAR again. :what: I am sure that is not what the BG was expecting, or wanted to see. That might be enough for him to leave a puddle and run. I am cracking myself up...:D :D
