Well, looks like I'll be moving from NC to the DFW area (new job is in Hurst) in a couple months, and would like some gun-related information for the state/area if anyone is from around there:

- What are the good gun stores in the area?
- Are there any good pistol and/or rifle ranges around?
- What are the costs associated with CCW permits, and are there any little things about it to keep in mind (unusual off-limits areas, etc.)?
- What local or state RKBA associations are there?

Also, any additional information or recommendations on good places/areas to live would be much appreciated. Thanks :)

I'm in Houston, not DFW so can't be much help. But I'm originally from Sanford, just down US1, and you'll love the lower cost of living.

fletcher, welcome to my area of texas.

I live in bedford, right next to hurst.

- What are the good gun stores in the area? In the HEB area (Thats Hurst/Euless/Bedford) there are 3 gunshops. SMR firearms, Pioneer Firearms, and Euless Gunshop.

- Are there any good pistol and/or rifle ranges around? From Hurst, the best one is probably Winchester Shooting Gallery on Lancaster Avenue in Fort Worth. http://www.winchestergallery.com/index.php?page=Location

- What are the costs associated with CCW permits, and are there any little things about it to keep in mind (unusual off-limits areas, etc.)?
Class costs vary, but average around $125. The CHL process/permit fee from Texas DPS is $140. State law says that you should have it in 90 days, but there is a huge backlog and is taking longer

- What local or state RKBA associations are there? The TSRA (Texas State Rifle Association is probably the biggest right now. I'm the DFW regional director for the Texas Citizens Defense League (TxCDL.org) and we are a new group trying to grow

Keep me in mind and when you get moved in, send me a PM. I'll show you around.

Obtaining a Concealed Handgun License (CHL) in Texas is more expensive, and more involved, than most states.

It requires sitting through an 8 hour class which covers where you can and cannot carry and laws relating to the use of deadly force, and a range qualification (easy for most people who shoot regularly). The class is actually rather informative and most instructors do a good job of keeping it interesting. Most places charge $100-150 for the class, which includes helping you fill out the paperwork and providing the photos and fingerprints required.

The Department of Public Safety (DPS) processes all CHL applications for the state (in contrast to North Carolina where IIRC permits are issued by the county sheriff). There is supposed to be a 60 day limit on processing the application, which DPS has been having trouble meeting due to high demand for permits recently. There is a $140 application fee for first-time permits; I believe that there is a 50% discount for veterans and senior citizens.

Renewals are every 5 years and consist of a shortened class and a range qualification; the fee to DPS for renewals is $70.

Many people complain about the variety of off-limits places in Texas, but it is quite reasonable compared to North Carolina (which IMHO has one of the most ridiculous lists of off-limits places). The highlights include:

  • School premises (defined as buildings only)
  • Courtrooms and court offices
  • School or professional sporting events
  • Establishments that get more than 51% of their income from sales of alcohol for on-premises consumption

In order for businesses to make themselves off-limits, they must post a Section 30.06-compliant sign (explained here).

Note also that government buildings are not off-limits; in fact notice under Section 30.06 is void legally if posted at an otherwise non-prohibited government facility (of course federal facilities are under a different set of rules).

One other note--open carry is prohibited. Intentional failure to conceal by a CHL holder is illegal (note this does not prohibit unintentional printing or other circumstances where your weapon may become expose accidentally).

A good forum with many posters who are very knowledgeable about Texas CHL and firearms issues is TexasCHLforum.com.

Thanks for all the information so far - I'll have to check out those shops and join the TSRA when I get there :D

Where are the good places to live in that area?

Welcome to Texas!!

You have some other really good options from Hurst. As far as gun stores go, that is up to your taste. I tend to enjoy CheaperthanDirt although their name belies their prices a bit lately. They are located a few miles west of Hurst at 820N and 35W. Another good one is Military Gun Supply (www.militarygunsupply.com) just a straight shot down 820 at Berry. Good surplus goodness there. Of course there are Bass Pro and Cabela's within 20-25 minutes of Hurst if that's your taste.

As far as shooting places, I prefer Quail Creek range (820N west to 35W north) in Justin. Outdoor range priced flat per shooter.

As to where to live, it depends on what you want to spend and whether you're buying or renting. Hurst itself is about the mid-range for the area. Colleyville, Southlake, Grapevine (northward are higher scale/price). Euless, Bedford, North Richland Hills are all about equal to Hurst. Richland Hills, Haltom City, Watagua, and some areas of Fort Worth up there are cheaper but a bit dodgy. PM me if you'd like any of the low down on the areas without risking insults in public.

Good luck with your new job!

Will you still be contract?
Direct-hire this time with a different company (fortunately). Fairly large one, wouldn't surprise me if there's another THR'er or two there.
