Teachers: where are the CONSERVATIVE unions?

Thanks for all the responses!

The AAE sounds like a really good organization to check out (not to mention a $$ deal). $125 compared to $440+ makes my day!

I'll check out their newsletter and probably join in a few days.

Thanks!!!

I can't wait to see my colleague's face when I tell her "no thanks". (A fellow teacher in my school happens to be the union prez.):D

I've really been turned off by all their scare tactics to join and this means I can finally tell them to take a hike.

norton,

Thanks for the info, i can understand your position and it has to be difficult. On the other hand i think that those of us that want to protect our rights need to become just as vocal as those that would take away those rights. We must not change our opinions or hide them from anyone Contrary to what they want you to think it is perfectly acceptable to voice those opinion, free speech is for everyone

Josh,

You're absolutely right. I have a first period class this year for the first time at this school and this is the period that we expand several times a year for "class discussions". These discussions may range from plagiarism to drug use. I've always been glad that I didn't have to participate in the past and still really wish I didn't have to, however I've decided that I'm going to use this as an opportunity to offer the students a perspective that differs from the party line.

I know what you guys mean. I meant to drop out last year, but I was worried that it would be a bad move. I come from a family of teachers, both parents and both sisters teach or taught. All conservative minded people too, but from the time I was in college, my parents always told me I needed to belong to the NEA. In SC it's not a union. I am so ready to tell the NEA to take a hike. THey have sample letters to resign or opt out of the union, so I'll be using one of those this week.

As much as I despise unions in general and civil servants' unions in particular, I must say that there is nothing inherently collectivist or liberal about unions. What is an outrage, however, is having a government impose mandatory union membership. It is an infringement upon our natural, Charter-protected freedom of association.
