(i)This is from Calibre Press. The company focuses on training law enforcement but this inccident can apply to anyone.(/I)

Last December (2003) Bellflower (California) Sheriff's Deputies Stephanie Patterson and Manuel Avina attempted to serve an arresst warrant on convicted felon Javier Torres, age 24. The warrant was for probation violation. What the deputies didn't know was that Torres was waiting for them and was observing their arrival through a television monitor.

Torres had surveillance cameras around the outside of his house including a camera hidden inside a birdhouse. The cameras provided a live feed to his television.

Torres, a reputed gang member, saw the deputies approach his back door and fired several rounds at them. One of Torre's rounds struck Patterson in her hip and another round hit Avina in his shoulder. In addition another round grazed Avina ( also in his shoulder area) and Deputy Patterson was also struck in the hip.

The deputies returned fire as Torres exited through the back door of the house. One the officer's bullets struck him in his right foot. Torres left a blood trail and he was apprehended six hours later. When located at an associate's house he ran out into the backyard and hid in a storage shed. K-9 officers retrieved him from his hiding place and he was taken into custody without further incident.

Torres was using a Calico M951 (9mm) which was stolen in Nevada earlier in the year. He had it in his possession when he was taken into custody.

The thing to remember is that the basics are what will get one through. Torres was a convicted felon with a history of firearm possession. These things need to be taken into consideration before an approach is made.

Further, should one wait for the suspect to exit the house or try to apprehend him at his place of work? what are his patterns? Ask yourself, 'Is it best to try and arrest him outside of his comfort zone (residence)?'

The important thing is to never forget the basics. these will get you through no matter how far technology advances.

Lastly neither deputy quit after having been shot. The maintained their mindset to win even after they were injured.
