Tell me about the 22 Creedmoor

Fantastic 22 caliber speed demon. I built one several years ago and love it.
I only shoot heavier bullet's out of mine - 75 / 80 / 88 grain bullet's. I shoot suppressed, so I use a 20" barrel. With 75gr bullet's I average 2489 fps.
The good - This cartridge shoots like a laser beam. The bad - Barrel life isn't very long before it opens up, You can get around 1200 rounds before it's time for a new barrel. Just buy two barrel's to begin with, and order another when you swap them out if you shoot a lot.

I don't care for the Alpha or Peterson 22 CM headstamped brass. It's too thick, and you can't get as high velocities as you can necking down Lapua or Starline 6mm CM cases. I use a set of custom Whidden dies, but I'm sure that there will be plenty of other choices of dies on the market since the cartridge has been SAAMI approved, and Hornady will be producing factory ammo for the 22 CM.

On a good day, it'll shoot 5 shot groups like this-

On an average day they are around this-

Not the 22CM, but the nearly identical 22 - 250 AI.

Built the gun on a 783 action for my buddy two Christmases ago? Something like that..... It's probably nearly the midpoint in its barrelife, He doesn't shoot as often as we do.
Accuracy is running about half minute of angle, and 75 gr amax over 7828 run 3450ish.
The fast 22s are very fun to shoot. Low recoil, very flat trajectory.
Pay for it in barrel life and limitations to minimum bullet weight.
They also dont do as well at very longer range as heavy 6mm or larger.

I may build myself one eventually, but ill still spend alot more time behind my 6.5CM or similar just because I have no interest in spending another 300-500 bucks a year in barrel maintenance. My 28 Nosler is barrel burner enough for me lol.

As long as the wind isn't too bad, ringing steel at 1k yards is pretty easy for it.
I put together a 25 CM to shoot the 135 gr Berger bullets a while back. I'm still working on loads for it, but it is showing some good results so far. Been shooting the 6.5 CM since 2009, built two custom's that have always shot excellent for me.
The Creedmoor case is like many other's that came before it. It's easy to neck up or down to another caliber, and get great results from it.
It isn't the best of anything, but it sure is fun, and has mild recoil so almost anyone can enjoy shooting it.

Looks like small primer 22-250 AI to me as well. But, those groups above mean you can repeatedly hit a chipmunk’s eye, no one will complain about that.

Just out of curiosity, has anyone ever made a 30-06 or 300 win mag length .378” rim diameter 22 center fire? IE, a long action only 223.

The rapid throat erosion the 22-250, Valkyrie, and especially the 220 swift suffer from seems to stem from the blast trying to escape from a .473” bolt face case down a .224“ hole. Imagine water flowing down a 4” pipe that instantly shrinks down the 3/4”, pressure jumps tremendously. Looks to me like cartridges do the same exact thing. I just wonder how a long action only 223 case with less shoulder would perform?

There might have been a Rook or something similar to it, but im not aware if one.
I dont believe theres ever been a .223 extra long, tho the 222RM is a tad longer.

I get the feeling a very long very narrow case would cause manufacturing as well as performance issues but thats a feeling than any hard opinion.

I wonder about powder burn myself I’m
Afraid it would be erratic

Anyone have any 1st hand experience with the 22 Creedmoor? Caught my attention the other day and looks like an interesting round.

Well I haven’t messed with one but I do want one when I do it it will be on a custom action that takes prefits so I can swap the barrel at my leisure so there’s that I did here that Hornady is making loaded ammo for it after the first of the year

The barrel burners cram too much powder into too small of a hole, 7 stw, .264 wm, .270wsm, 6.5 leopard etc etc, the .22 cheetah and .22-06 were both hard on barrels and brass, bolt face has little to do with overbore syndrome.
