Tell me about the SKS, Uncle High Road....

If you are using re-loadable ammo the Yugo's gas valve on a 56/66 can be turned off, making it a straight pull action instead of launching your brass into orbit.

Doggonit. All this SKS talk. Now y'all have me looking for another one...

Doggonit. All this SKS talk. Now y'all have me looking for another one...

For years I wasn't a fan of the SKS rifles. "Too heavy for the caliber", I thought. "Not accurate enough", I said to anyone who asked. Then last year I started figuring I should get a Russian one because the prices were going up and up on them and I thought I should have one, you know, just because.

I picked up a '53 Izhevsk at a gunshow for a song. Once I started shooting it, I was hooked. No, they don't shoot tiny groups off the bench, but they were never designed to do that. What they are is a battle rifle that uses a intermediate cartridge and are minute of man accurate. They are cheap to shoot and a lot of fun.

I find benchrest shooting to be as exciting as watching paint dry. I would much rather shoot at reactive targets at varying ranges. For my kind of shooting, the SKS is a hoot.

I now have four Russians having just picked up this '54 Tula the other day. This is by far the best of the lot as it is a matching number original rifle. It is also the only laminated SKS I have.

Darn, that is one nice museum quality SKS!

Back in the 80's when I saw my first non bring back or over yonder SKS I was range officer on a small rifle range that had a nice concrete pad with stable tables and a nice roof of corrigated "tin" over plywood with 4x4s providing support.

I walked behind the shooter as he fired his first shot. As he checked his spotting scope his buddy was looking around for the ejected case. I commented that they sometimes ejected straight up so it could have bounced anywhere. For whatever reason I glanced up and there was the spent case, sticking mouth first into one of the 4X4 cross beams.

Right away I knew I had to have a rifle that provided its own AA coverage while firing at targets down on the ground!

Great buy. That's as nice as an SKS is going to get.
