My disappointment at my evening's shooting being forced indoors by some t-storms was greatly tempered when the fellow who came in right after me turned out to be Peter Dunn, armed with a bag o' Detonics pistols he needed to function test. He asked me and another fellow to help him out by shooting his pistols and ammo to remove any bias in his tests - ooh, twist my arm - which we did.

I shot a CombatMaster, a full-size 9-11-01 and a custom-build full size that was headed to Ft. Bragg for a SF operator. The CombatMaster was surprisingly easy to control, and very accurate. The custom pistol had adjustable night sights with a uniquely colored tritium insert (don't know that I should divulge it, but I'll say that I've never seen of the color in any brand of night sight before) and a rail, and was also amazingly accurate (I was shooting fairly well with it, and he saved my target to take back to the shop!). All of the pistols appeared very well made, function as such, and finished and fed both the fmj and hp (Black Hills) ammo without a hiccup.

Mr Dunn is clearly happy to be back making Detonics pistols again, and very enthusiatic about the product. I'm not in the market for a high-end 1911. But having personally shot, or having witnessed others shoot in matches and classes, most of the 1911 brands from low budget crap to high end custom jobs, I'd have to put Detonics at the top of the list if I were.
