Thank you for allowing me to join the forum. I am a totally new gun owner. (Unlike my husband) As such I am learning all kinds of things and look forward to learning more.
First off - background - I am a former archer who due to advancing disability cannot shoot bow anymore. But I love target shooting - what to do? I got a few guns.
First one is a Ruger .22. 22/45 Lite. Perfect for a complete beginner with little hand strength imo. (I’m getting to my point slowly) But of course in the great ammo dessert none is to be had. (And there are 2 bullet factories where I live) So, dry fire practice. Which (for me) gave not much feed back. So I discovered there are laser cartridges you can get. Yippee!
Laser items for .22 are as scarce as toilet paper was right after Covid hit. But…after several months I found a company and a seller on eBay for a .22 laser. The company is Accurize and they are based in Norway. The laser slides into the barrel and has been outstanding. Next is the no no no. Dry firing a rim fire. So after looking at snap caps several places on the internet, I wasn’t happy with the offerings and started looking through gun forums. Lots and lots of folks waxed lyrical about Hillman drywall anchors. 4-6 x7/8 - the yellow ones. Got a box and they were TERRIBLE. (Within this last year) I could dent the rim through with my fingernail. My understanding/impression is - it’s not too expensive to replace a firing pin, but you do NOT want to ding up your breech face.
So I trotted down to Home Depot and took a .22 CCI mini mag in my pocket for comparing. What I found was 8-10 Everbuilt white anchors that have a decent lip to protect your breech face 100%, fit in my Mark iv 22/45 Lite, and my husband’s old Ruger single six. Yes they are a tad longer. It really doesn’t matter - they fit. Yes, it ejects. No, the diameter is not too big. I have no clue why anyone would think a plastic anchor will cycle through a mag - they obviously are not going to do that very well if at all. They are there to protect my gun and doing marvelously. Anyone who talks up Hillman 4-6 anchors hasn’t bought any lately I’m pretty sure. They are crappy now.
Next I looked for laser cartridges for our .380’s, husbands .357 and 38 special. Skippy - some are pricey, but usually you get what you pay for. Being an inveterate shopper, I kept looking. Found a gentleman out of Florida by the name of Ray and his company is Aviators Tactical. Wondermous cartridges and prices. So far I’ve only used these inside at less than 20 yards, but they have worked like a champ. Yay!
Now the question - as much as I love my Mark iv Lite, I do NOT love the sights. I am an old fart who uses progressive glasses, and it can be difficult. Any suggestions would be great, and no I won’t be putting them on. A gunsmith will need to do it. I do not want the $9.99 special crap, nor do I want the hundreds of dollars sight. Just a nice middle of the road that works well. Thanks!

I used to wear progressive and stuck an ADE red dot sight on my MK III 22/45 lite just to see if I would like a red dot sight since I had no experience with that type of sight. I believe it cost about $40 from Amazon when I bought it several years ago. I thought that if I didn't care for it or it quit I wouldn't be out a lot of money. I love it and the thing is still going strong. Now that I no longer require glasses except for really close stuff I still like it and my groups with it are about half the size or a little less of what I can do with the factory sights.

I noticed you mentioned little hand strength. I can still handle mine just fine but having two young great grand daughters that did have problems I put a TandemKross halo ring on it to aid them in working the slide. They love it and I have developed a like for it too.

By the way, welcome to the forum. You will find a lot of friendly, helpful people here and maybe a grouch or two. Just ignore those.

I'm a long time progressive, tri-focal, and back to progressive eye glass wearer. I'm naturally near sighted, which means my needs for glasses will differ from someone who is far sighted or just needs readers.

I like red dots for .22 pistols. I have not spent real money on red dots for .22 pistols, yet. I've only used the ubiquitous Bushnell TRS-25 (I have 3) and a cheapie Firefield Impact Mini. I can't really recommend the Firefield as I had to have it replaced, but the replacement has done well on my Browning Buckmark Camper.

I really want to get something other than tube type red dots (TRS-25) for my "target" pistols, but the jump in money from the cheapies (< $100) to the mid-range versions is quite large.

Thank you for the red dot tips! So I started looking on Mr. Amazon and there are a bewildering choice of red dots. I found this one: https://www.amazon.com/Sig-Sauer-SOR52001-Romeo5-Compact/dp/B01C95I8N4/ref=sr_1_4?crid=S3J14UYCH4IW&keywords=sig+sauer+romeo+5&qid=1646251548&sprefix=Sig+sauer+,aps,157&sr=8-4 and am wondering opinions? I like how it turns on and off, (motion) and seems easy to adjust and mount (a plus for beginner like me - I feel I could actually put it on and not wonder if I did it wrong) It is about $50 more than I wanted to spend since I haven’t tried one yet, but oh well - I have discovered guns/stuff is like going to look at purses. The one you end up liking is ALWAYS more than you were planning on spending.
Hmmm…maybe never mind? This one really isn’t made for pistols?

Howdy and welcome to the forum and shooting!

First off I’ll tell you that Ruger pistols do not incur damage from dry firing. With rimfires, yes some guns can be damaged by dry firing but Ruger semi autos are not one of them.

I can’t really recommend a sighting setup for you but I’ll suggest fiber optic sights. Known as fire sights as a name brand.

I can suggest though, playing with different target configurations. A white paper and black bullseye is the worst for my eyes. What I’ve found that works for me is a cardboard backer (light brown in color) and a fluorescent target. Green or yellow or pink.

That coupled with all black rear sights is what works for me. I can use colored front sights or all black. But if I have colored outline rear or dots or whatever, it tends to strain my eyes.

I've had good results with Pachmayr 22 snaps

About $15 for 24 is not a bad price off eBay.

I'm more comfortable with a red dot for dry fire (or live fire, for that matter), especially versus a laser. As the latter mostly seems to just magnify any shake, jitter, tremble, or the like already in one's hands as is. Red dot allows better concentration (to my mind) for presentation and follow-through.

Your mileage may vary.

I put on the Williams Firesights on my MKIV. They work well for me.
Now the question - as much as I love my Mark iv Lite, I do NOT love the sights. I am an old fart who uses progressive glasses, and it can be difficult. I see pictures of a lot of Bushnell TRS-25 red dots mounted on Ruger Mk pistols over on the RFC website. It is the same type of tube sight as the Sig but with a more pistol friendly mounting system. I like the Burris FastFire III in a dovetail mount but with current pricing that combo is going to run over $300.

I bet those fire sights would really help aging eyes. I’ve never used them on a handgun. It’s been so long since I used them on a rifle I can’t remember what improvement they offered.

I put the Williams fiber optic site on my MK2 and love it. I could not see the black front site at all even outside. nice thing they come with different color fiber tubes.

This would be a relatively cheap option that has worked very well for me...a UTG red dot (except I opted for the green dot).
I paid around 125$. I have this type of sight on more than a few handguns.
