A hammerless S&W snubbie with Tyler T-grip and Barami hip grip is a hard to beat combo for effective deep cover concealment. The Barami makes the pistol disappear.

I never thought I'd say this, but.......
I want a 442 now !!! (I'm glad this is an equal opportunity club
) I've always been a fan of steel revolvers and currently carry a 3" model 60 that is a fabulous little gun. It was the PERFECT ccw choice for me at the time I bought it, as I was a newbie to small handguns and the extra heft of stainless steel and the 3" barrel really helped enable me to become more proficient shooting the little j frame. However, my middle aged back doesn't always share my love for the heft of the steel at the end of the day and the airweight line is looking better all the time. I realized this a couple of months ago when my back went out (a semi annual event lol). For a couple of weeks , wearing a holster was simply not an option and I was a perfect victim hobbling down the street (obviously injured) and unarmed. That is when I realized the NEED for either a 642 or a 442...I would have felt a LOT better having one in my jacket pocket at the ready if needed. This gun will also fill the niche for those times when my 1911 or even the little model 60 would be a bit much to conceal, or too much trouble to holster up for a quick jaunt to the store, etc. Over the last few days I've read every single post in this thread and have learned a LOT about the little airweights (I don't think I've read that much since college LOL) .....a huge thank you is in order to each and every one of you that posted in the club....you've actually converted a die hard steel revo fan. Oh...and no....I'm not replacing the model 60, just getting it a worthy partner to share duty with. So...sometime in the next day or two, a trip to the gun store will be in order followed by a trip to the range Thanks again to everyone here and may you all have a joyous holiday season.

On to other things. I hope to get my 642 Saturday. I owned one before about 15 years ago, but when I went to a different police agency, they did not allow revolver cary. I'm wondering now if my new 642-2 is going to be a better gun then the old 642. Other then the lock, did S&W make alot of changes over the 642, 642-1, 642-2 series?
I'm also dying to get the LG-405 grip. Guess I'll have go through my boxes looking for things to sell on Ebay, as I'm tapped out :banghead: .

Does anyone have an opinion on the Glaser safety slug for carry use? Unbelievably expensive, but looks like a lethal load, to me.

It's official now...I came home today with a new 442 and I can hardly wait to get to the range and try it out ! The trigger and action don't feel too bad considering its new, although it has a considerably heavier pull than my other revolvers (not necessarily a bad thing considering the role of the snubby IMO). I'll see how it feels after its initial cleaning, a little oil, a couple thousand dry fires and a few trips to the range...I'm thinking it will be just fine. I also bought a set of Barami hip grips (black) and plan on putting them on as soon as I can find a some black Tyler T-grips to go with it. I have a set of the Tylers on my model 60 mated with the old school S&W service grips and that seems to work well for me. In the meantime though, I'll just stick with the stock rubber grip that came on it and see what works best for me. Any opinions/experience on the Barami/Tyler set up ?? A friend of mine has this combo on his 649 and swears by it. I'd love to hear from others that have tried it. Thanks

As of an hour ago, I too am an official member of the club. Picked up my brand spankin' new 642, along with a Desantis Nemesis pocket holster, a Fobus paddle and 120 rounds of Speer Gold Dot +P. Can't wait to take it to the range. I was gonna post a photo, but then I figured it would be nothing you folks haven't seen already.

It kind of looks like most people prefer the 15oz 642 to the 12oz 340 / 340PD...?

I just found this thread in the last couple of days.....the 642 was the first concealed carry firearm I aquired when I got my carry license last spring.
I've been considering a laser for it. I have a laser on my Keltec .380. I think the 642 needs one also. Is there any built into the grip types besides Crimson Trace.
Any good sites for the Crimson trace grips or others?

I'd love to get one of these guns.
I was looking at some laser grips for my gun and the guy there let me try out how they work. He has a 642 with them on there. That gun just felt good, nice and light. It's a gun I would love to have.

Well, my "Merry 642 Christmas" just went bust. I found out yesterday evening that my local indoor range burned down! The rumor is that a couple of knuckleheads were rapid firing semi-auto LR's on one of the end lanes, and the muzzle flash accumulated in the accoustic materials on the side wall. Poof. Up in smoke. Thankfully, nobody was hurt, but the range may be a total loss. Looks like I won't be able to break in my new 642. The nearest indoor public range is an hour and a half from where I'm at. I'm screwed.

My new 442 is a keeper
I took my new 442 out to the farm today to try it out for the first time, and WOW !.....I was really impressed !! I ran 105 rounds through it in about an hour and my hands have no regrets....far from what I expected from the little airweight. The recoil was sharp, but very manageable and not too punishing at all. The ammo-du-jour was American Eagle 130 grain FMJ (100 rounds) and 5 rounds of Speer Gold Dot 135 grain .38 special +P hollow points. I would imagine though with 158 grains it may be a bit more "stimulating", but I haven't tried those yet. I didn't have any paper targets handy so I pulled some empty milk jugs from the plinking bin just to have something to shoot at. From 5 and 7 yards, I was able to consistently put every round through the jugs shooting with both hands and one handed, slow firing and rapid double/triple taps. At 10 yards, I was only landing about 2 out of 5 using both hands, so I have more work to do there....but I feel very confident that will improve with more practice and range time. Considering its my first time with an airweight snubby, I was quite pleased. Next time out, I'll bring some paper targets so I can get a better idea of the groups I'm shooting. I can say this though....as soon as I get consistent in the 10-15 yard range (just a matter of more practice with it), me and my 442 will be spending a LOT of time together in the near future.
