Just because FOX owns the rights to Firefly, and won't sell it, doesn't mean that a TV continuation of the story is impossible.

They could just call it 'Serenity: The Series'.

This is exactly why the roleplaying game is called "Serenity" and not "Firefly." It is also why the book details certain non-player charcaters in broad descriptions instead of calling Badger, for example, by name.

Just so you guys know, they are showing episodes of firefly on Universal HD. I have started calling things "shiny"... Great show!

"Shiny" I just ran across that term in a new SciFi book by John Ringo and some other guy.

It is a Space Marine term and now I think I know where it came from.

Bart Noir
How is still trying to get his Firefly set back from nephews.

John McD...there are at least two published sf authors on the forum. Add in that lots of popular sf is _military_ sf, i think there is a pretty good connection.

Although most filmed "sci-fi" isn't sf at all.

When I heard it on Firefly I wondered if "shiny" is related to "splendid" one of the alternate Eng. translations of Ger. "herrlich"? Or is there a Chinese word for excellant that translates as shiny? (My wife and I watched the priemer episode the other night; no great fan of my other sf or sci-fi, she later remarked "That was good.")

Firefly is coming to blu-ray with some new extras, I wonder how much the video would be improved, since the series had a somewhat gritty look.
Since I'm sure most Firefly fans here are also Lonesome Dove fans, a new widescreen 2 disc blu and standard dvd set will be released in August, the picture quality is much improved over the crappy dvd that's been available for years, although there is some top and bottom cropping, there is also more picture information on the sides than was on the original broadcast, so that means LD was filmed in a wider format all those years ago.

Lonesome Dove. Another great show. The truest story of the human character ever told.

Sure wished Sci-Fi channel had picked up Firefly. Just got the DVD set and been watching it the last few days. Great show. I think all network execs should be lined up and forced to watch Beauty and the Geek or something similar non-ending. They are complete idiots in my book. Every good show out there ends up getting canceled.

First they put all these cool sci-fi shows on Friday night were ratings are sure to be low anyway. Then they wonder why the ratings are low and cancel. I'm surprised the new Battlestar Galactica lasted as it started on Fridays I think. What, do they think ALL sci-fi fans are complete nerds and can't get dates or go out on Fridays?

Read the wiki article for a little insight into the Fox execs idiocy and meddling.

This thread got me reading up on Firefly some more.

Interesting find: Steven Brust was contracted to write a Firefly novel. The project was canceled, but Brust put up the novel on his own site, here: http://dreamcafe.com/firefly.html

I haven't read it yet, myself, but I'm thinking it'll probably be decent.

Thanks for the link, BLB68!

Hopefully he's true to the theme of the story and doesn't try to inject his own politics into it, like Tim Minear (Whedon's co-producer) was afraid would happen with the screenplay to The Moon is a Harsh Mistress.

Can someone ID the comped pistol River used in "War Stories"? There is a screencap in #125 of this thread . . . Many thanks!

Cheers

HANS

I was pretty sure it was a 1911 or some sorts...

Might have to watch it again to make sure though.

It's definitely not a Government-style pistol; I now think it is a Star M45 Firestar with compensator.

Cheers

HANS

OK i just broke out the disc and watched War Stories again

Jayne had a TT sig 229
Simmon had a long slide glock w/optic attachment (but no optic)

River's pistol at first looked like a EAA long-slide with a 2 port compensator. then i looked closer at the ribbed slide, elongated slide release and downturned beavertail and i'm lead to believe it is likely a Star too

Firefly was my favorite one season show followed by Quark the Space Garbageman

In any art their are details missed and details gotten "right". Tonight I watched the episode "our own Mrs Renolds". When they shot out of the depressurized airlock their was no sound. That is a good detail made right.
