The K Frame

It appears that you have been bitten by the revolver bug. You may not be experiencing the symptoms now,
but give it a few more weeks. Months perhaps. Symptoms include:...
I confirm from experience that Dr. Jad speaks truth.

"Hello, my name is Nem, and I have a revolver addiction."

<response from others in the room> "Hi, Nem."

Actually, for me, it's not that bad. I've got two, which is all I'll have ... for now.

{{{ "Denial (having acquired a wheelgun and swearing you will aquire no more - that your bases are covered)" }}}

But the point is, when I really discovered wheels, the semis left the house and haven't returned.

I came across something interesting at my local gun shop, a Smith & Wesson Pre Model 10.

The serial number (S9179xx) is matching on the butt, barrel, and cylinder. On the right side of the frame it says “Made in U.S.A.,” the right side of the pinned 4” barrel says “38 S&W Special Ctg.” Left side of the frame has the logo, left side of the barrel has “SMITH & WESSON” in sans-serif letters. The front sight is the half-moon style and the rear is a groove across the top-strap, squared at the rear. The trigger is grooved. The finish is well worn but even. The barrel looks clean, with well defined lands and grooves. The chambers of the cylinder look used but not abused and the cylinder locks up fairly tightly.

They are asking $199.99. I’m not sure if I should resist.

Any ideas on her age or any other details?

Thanks.

Sincerely,

Prof. A. Wickwire

Edit: They also have a Model 10 for $249.99 and a Model 19-5 for 299.99.

Prof.,

Likely 1947 or so. The S numbered K frames stopped at S999999 in 48. A letter from Roy Jinks, S&W historian, would tell you the particulars on this gun. If the gun is in good mechanical shape, the price ain't bad.

Ok ok.... I've been smitten/bitten also... I just took possession of a Model 19-4 Combat Magnum. I can't believe I didn't discover them sooner! Will post a pic as soon as I figure out how, and take a few better ones. I've already had it to the range twice and I am humbled and ashamed how much better the gun is than I am! My quest for more K frames will continue! I'm wondering if anyone can give me a "born date"? Serial# 61K3XXX

sorry for the wrong model designation.... it is a 19-4 not 3

A near-flawless Model 14-4 followed me home from the gun shop today, along with the case lube and polish I actually went there for. :D

As soon as my pentode tube training figures out the software, I'll post an image. :scrutiny:

Question For Trivia Gurus

I can't seem to figure out how to reduce the size or resolution of my images, so I can't post an image of this revolver. I'll do my best to describe it.

I'm not concerned about an exact manufacture date, just a rough period as in "early '80s" or "late '70s" -- my guess as to production period.

The item is a Model 14-4: serial 83K7***; blued finish; square butt; barrel is pinned; straight/no taper barrel with bead-blast finish to top rib; no shroud over ejector rod; no barrel underlug; cylinder charge holes are NOT recessed; Patridge front sight and adjustable rear; wide, grooved, "target" trigger; wide, knurled, "target" hammer spur.

The mainspring is wider and thinner than current production. (Internals look to be original Smith but this one feels as good as my "tuned" Ks.)

Can someone provide a knowledgeable estimate of the production date?

Wish to join this club.

I love my 13-2 fixed sights and all.

Anyone have a good non leather (yes i know) shoulder holster they would recommend for my 357?

-Dru

OK, y'all have pried me away from college football long enough to answer a couple questions. All info provided by SCSW 3rd Ed.
I'm wondering if anyone can give me a "born date"? Serial# 61K3XXX
Appears to be 1980 Mfg.
The item is a Model 14-4: serial 83K7***
Also appears to be 1980 Mfg. Everything else in your description appears normal as the pinned bbl was deleted in 1982, and only Magnum and Rim Fire S&W revolvers had counter bored (recessed) chambers.

I suspected as much, given variations in metal polish and blue. I remember reading critiques of Smith products at that time in Shooting Times, moaning about finish variations. Ks from middle '70s and earlier seem to have uniform polish/blue while later examples have a darker blue/black finish. Of course, with no image, you couldn't see all that.

I test-fired it yesterday and it shot well, considering it ate what I had laying about. It's fun to find a "new", 27-year-old firearm! :D

Thank you for looking it up!!

Def4pos8, I recently picked up a police surplus model 10-8 which was likely made in 1988 based on the SN. It does have a shallow heavy gloss black finish compared to the lighter yet very deep semi-gloss blue finish on my two late 1940s K Frames.

The finish may not be as pretty as earlier guns, but it shoots beautifully. I don't know what ammo you're using but the fixed sights on S&W revolvers are almost always factory regulated for 158gr +P and 148gr standard pressure. Somehow these two loads shoot to near identical POA/POI. I know you're Model 14 has adjustable sights, but 148gr full wadcutters were and are very popular target load, so I think you'd probably get good results using them.
