Hi all,

Here's my two entries. The first is my 39A, 2000 vintage, shooting with a 4X Leupold rimfire sight from my shooting bag, at 25 yards. The ammunition is CCI Mini Mags.

The second is my 60's vintage 39A with a Skinner sight. The ammunition is also CCI Mini Mags, shooting from a supported position off the top of my shooting bag.

Matches like these remind one just how much fun these guns are.

Here's my entry. It may be a little under 25 yards, just a guess. Shot from kneeling, open sights, 1950 39a with Remington Yellow Jackets.

Great to see some participation!

I wish I could have gotten out to the range and worked up my best groups, but three CB caps out in the yard was the best I could muster.

Now... how to pick a winner?[emoji3]

I wish I had found another card, so I could have shot more than one group.

Johnmcl won the supported position class, fast frank won the CB Short class,

I'm going to declare Johmcl the winner. Nice shooting Hoss!

Glad to see a few of us get out and shoot some index cards. The feedback I got was that some of us are still digging out from winter. Once the weather warms up we'll have to do a more formal and organized match.

10/22 vs Marlin 39? Owning several of both, the last I'd let go is the 39

Nothing wrong with a 10/22, I like mine. The Marlin is just a better quality rifle.

43 wooded acres, it's Marlin lever country for sure. There are tons of rabbits all over, the far side is oaks so plenty of squirrels over there. Then in the fall I grab one of my 336s, either 30-30 or 35 Remington and go walking around until I see a deer.

Mo,

I do hope you realize that you are poster #2 in this thread of now 4559 entries, spanning more than eight years. Its been quite the ride on this thread.

I don't normally toot my own horn, but I was proud of this and seems relevant to this wonderful thread. Took 1st place in a pin-head shoot using my trusty old 39A. Beat out 1 other lever guy and several other tricked out automatics, mostly 10/22s and M&P 15-22s.

All Hail the 39A! 50+ years old and still doesn't miss a beat.

Handloader357: It ain't bragging when ya done it! NICE SHOOTING! A rifleman with a rifleman's rifle.

That was a pretty good example of "you can't miss fast enough to win a gunfight." Very impressive.

JohnMcl: Nem got this thread going and like the rifle itself just keeps going and going. It comes up on web searches, there is some excellent content in there especially anything posted by Dfariswheel (sp?) and our man Fast Frank keeps powering us forward and posting great pictures, a long range rock shooting video that I'm sure inspired a lot of us to stretch see what our 39's can do beyond squirrel hunting ranges and reminding us to pay attention to what is probably one of the most fun rifles ever built.

I be we've helped sell a few 39s along the way. I know I've bought five or six since this thread started....

My Marlin 39A is a 1952 production model. Shoots pretty well, especially with the Marbles tang mounted peep sight on it. Ejection is sometimes a bit clunky, probably needs a new part.
But........ my new Henry Golden Boy is seeing much more range time.

I scored some AMMO!

Got 500 rounds of Winchester. It's in a red plastic box that looks like CCI plastic to me.

I've seen the guys on Rimfire Central trashing this stuff. It seems that their super trick Rugers don't shoot it well.

I don't know 'bout that, but I'm betting my Marlins will shoot the stuff. They shoot anything.

I hope to get out for a session soon, but it's raining cats and dogs here right now.

Also good news... I broke my glasses.

Yeah, I know. That sounds like bad news, doesn't it?

Well, I've just realized that the glasses I broke were about ten years old. Think maybe that prescription was a little out of date?

I'll have some new eyes here pretty quick, and I'm hoping my shooting will reflect that change.

We'll see! (That's a joke, son!)

Hey guys, just an update. A couple years ago I got a 1958 39a off gunbroker and when it arrived, it had pitting from rust [which the owner didn't divulge]. I shot it to see if it had decent accuracy and determined it did, so I took it to a local gunsmith to have it refinished and reblued. Yesterday I finally picked it up [after just over 2 years being there.........he had a back log, and also worked on it a little until his hands got affected]. I was okay with the time lag because he really does good work. Anyway, I will post a main photo here, but will also submit a new thread with "Before and After" images. I hope to do that by the weekend. I got a new computer so will have to get it set up.

Fast Frank;

I'd be interested in a bit more detail on that stuff. There are several Winchester branded ammo varieties that come in the red plastic 100 packs. However, as far as I'm concerned, the 40 grain PowerPoint .22lr at an adverstised 1280 fps is the cream of the crop. I have several guns that really do show their appreciation when they're fed that stuff.

Also, you're hanging out on the wrong forum over there. Switch to the CZ/BRNO folks, probably the single most active category over there. With a number of CZ owners who agree with me about the PowerPoints.

I put a scope on the 39a mentioned a few posts above. It does pretty well. Took it to an indoor range and shot at 50 yards and ran some bulk Winchester 333 round box stuff through it. Not the best stuff in the world, but managed to squeak a sort of 1/2 inch group with it on my last 5 shots. Would have been legit if one round hadn't flown off by about an inch or so, but for the most part, I think it seems to shoot pretty well.

There's lots of folks that don't like scopes on their lever guns.

Truth be told, I agree with them to some extent. The whole "Old School" cowboy thing just isn't about scopes.

But I've gotten to be a little older and my eyes just aren't what they were when I was a teenager. I have a Marlin 39 with a scope on it.

It's still my favorite rifle. I have others that are quite a bit more accurate and shoot better groups from the bench, but they just don't trip my trigger quite the same way my model 39 does.

There's something weird about a lever rifle. (Applies to my .30-30 too)

From the bench, it's nothing to get excited about. Oh, it's accurate enough... but it's not a target rifle. My 39A shoots 2MOA or a little better on paper.

But take that same rifle out in the field and somehow it shoots like a lazer beam.

There's something about the way it's shaped and how it balances that just makes it easy to get good hits from offhand positions.

I have made some pretty good shots with that rifle, and it gives me a familiar confidence when I look through that scope and see that clear sharp picture. I get as steady as I can, and then ask myself "Can I make this shot?".

The Squirrels around here hate that rifle. :)

JohnMCL, Please excuse me but, where are your measurements taken from in the pictures? I see no reference points at all. Groups, are usally measured from center point to center point, aren't they?
Steve

FAST FRANK, normally I would agree with the idea of not having a scope on a lever rifle, but for me, that is more for the actual old straight stock style. My 39a is the pistol grip, so I think it looks fine to have a scope on that design. But yeah, as eyes get older, sometimes you do need some help.

Marlin 39 friends, I need some help. I have a 39D that has been causing some trouble. Every time I load more than 6-7 rounds in the magazine tube, the rifle functions fine for the first 1-2 rounds. Then the lever locks up in the open position. When I disassemble the rifle to relieve the jam, every remaining round in the magazine tube comes out of the magazine, at the receiver end.

I assume there is a spring attached to the cartridge stop which is weak, but I'm not sure. Any ideas? Unfortunately I cannot take picture of the jam because angles into the receiver and the small size of the ejection port prevent it. The lever is just jammed in the open position. Thanks in advance for your help!
