Fast Frank: Glad you are at least seeing some ammo down your way. It's a rare occurrence around here. Looks like the new normal is for 22lr to be at least $0.05 (Bulk)/round and $0.08/round for CCI or better. Match ammo used to cost me the ridiculous sum of $0.06 / round!

Kind of like $4/gal gas. You adjust but you drive (shoot) less.

The Aguila ammo is very good in my experience. The 40 grain SubSonic (NOT the SSS / Sniper Supsonic 60gr) used to be a real bargain - $13/brick and would shoot almost as well as the $30/brick match ammo. I think the last Aquila Subsonic ammo I saw in a store was well north of $80 a brick.

I'm well into my last bricks of the Subsonic and Match 22lr ammo. I doubt I'll buy more. The Bulk ammo shoots pretty well in my 22's though my target scores are a little lower... The Grouse don't know the difference though...

Back on topic... I sold my Marlin 1897 Cowboy. Just wasn't getting a lot of use. I'll miss it but in this economy it's hard to have multiples of rifles. The 39CL will now be my full time silhouette match gun and be with me when I'm Grouse Hunting.

I will miss the 1897 Cowboy in the 200 meter long range rimfire matches though...

Packed around nicely for a 24" barreled rifle.

One of the many things I learned from my Grandparents was that we only have so many heartbeats in us. Now that I've probably used more than I have left I do my best to spend them on things that I enjoy with folks I like. Days in the woods with my 39 count as heartbeats well spent.

I know where JustsayMo is coming from when he says he's going to sell some of his .22s. I took my 1980 model 39as and a little Remington 12A (made in March, 1936) to the LGS and placed them on consignment. I really like both guns, but have a few too many (to this ol' boy's thinking). I've got 9 rifles and 2 revolvers of .22 caliber + several other guns. I'm not getting around as well as I used to and I'm being 'used' too much by other family members. lol It seems that I just can't get the time to go out to shoot. And, then, as JustsayMo stated, the ammo is getting expensive; but mainly it's hard to find. I find some at the local Walmart occasionally, but am allowed only 2 or 3 boxes. When I go out to shoot, I like to burn at least a couple of hundred rounds. I'm not going to get lower than several hundred on hand!

I'm getting to the point of finishing up a model 39 project I've been working on for years. It's going to be wearing a Leupold rimfire 4X that I already own, the question is: What rings? I'd like to put either Talley's or Deadnutz on it, but I am beginning to think neither makes rings for my gun. If it makes any difference, it's a 1964 model 39.

So if neither company does make product for it, what's the general consensus of the board for a quality mount/ring system? One big reason I wanted either the Talley lightweights or the Deadnutz is that they are integrated mount/ring systems.

Here's my 39's. The carbine was made in 1954 and given to me by my dad on my 15th birthday and the other rifle is a rare Model 39A-DL produced only in 1961 and 1962 with a production of only a little over 3000 rifles.

The DNZ is an awesome mount, but it's going to be too tall for a rimfire scope. It was designed for a 40MM objective.

You can call Tim at DNZ and have him make you a custom mount sized for a rimfire scope, but it's going to be expensive.

The side effect of that is that the new mount might become a production item and then be readily available for everybody else.

In reality, I don't think a rimfire sized scope really needs all the beef offered by the DNZ mount. It's not as heavy and isn't big enough to have the leverage over the mount.

What are y'all's thoughts on adding peep sights to a vintage 39a? On one hand I don't want to mess with it, but on the other, I figure if I put a period type tang sight then it will proper use of a fine firearm.

I think if it fits the period, and it makes the rifle more accurate for you ... no harm no foul!

rromeo: I like peep sights best, personally. I went with a brass Skinner on my model 39a.


Don't really know enough about scope rings and mounts to help. Casual Google on "39a wild life" seems to indicate some commemorative edition; not sure if it was done just once or several times.

The Marlin 39A is the first gun I ever had. My dad bought it when I was eight or nine.

Don't think I'll ever get rid of it.

It's remained bone stock all these years, but I'd like to hear from you wiser more experienced types what would be the most accuracy-aiding iron sights I could put on it.

Don't want to scope it, but I could use some help here, hahah.

Thought it was time I joined.... and it's pretty much the fault of this thread. I found this when I was thinking of buying a 39A (I had an old, and very worn one a few years back and always regretted selling it) and by the time I'd read the first dozen or so pages I'd found one to buy and had ordered a Skinner sight. (I'm still trying to work my way through all the posts, but I've only made it to page 38 so far!).

I finally picked up my 39A last week (1961/2 from the serial no.), fitted the Skinner sight ....and I'm delighted with it

Here are a few pictures of my 39a. The one on the table is a 1959 39a. Just bought that one a few days ago. The one against tree is a 1979 39a. Both are very accurate out to 65 yards on squirrels. Took the 59 39a hunting today and bagged two fox squirrels.

A question: I'm going to have to scope a model 39 and I'm having a bit of confusion regarding rings & mounts. Does the model 39 indeed share the same spacing and thread with the 336/1894 series for bases? When I query Brownell's site for model 39 scope mounts, Talley comes up and I'd love to put them on. However, all the Talley offerings state that they are for 336's & no mention is made of the model 39.

I've gone to the Talley website, and am unable to find a definitive answer there either. Called Leupold, they don't make anything, but suggested I try B-Square. Just went to Brownell's website, poked in B-Square & got a pass on the model 39. DNZ doesn't make them either, and they're overkill anyway.

I am one fortunate man! Not only do I get to pick up a Model 1894CS357 next week, there's also a new-old-stock Williams peep sight in the store that fits it!
